Structural Packaging Designer

The Position
Launch Packaging Design is looking to recruit a structural packaging designer with a minimum of 2 years industry experience, for a client facing role. The candidate must have a strong product design, 3D design, technical design, or design engineering background, be proficient with CAD, with a minimum of 2 years’ CAD experience, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Applying for this role is straight forward Scroll down and click on Apply to be considered for this position.
As this is a technical position, strong analytical skills, including the ability to interpret and communicate technical briefs and concepts are essential, along with the ability to confidently discuss and solve technical problems internally with colleagues, and externally with clients and suppliers.
The role will see the successful candidate support our clients by providing technical packaging consultation and engineering services, primarily, but not exclusively, converting technical briefs into 3D structural packaging design solutions across a number of media including glass, crystal, aluminium, wood, ceramic, and plastic.
Our in-house production knowledge and technical design competence formed the foundation of our business, and remains core to our business. However, as we are also a creative design agency, it is expected that what we produce looks beautiful and is carefully crafted, whatever the context, so an excellent attention to detail is essential, while a good eye for design is desirable.
Although no specific experience of structural packaging design is required, it is required that the successful candidate is self-starting, has a pragmatic and proactive attitude towards learning new skills on the job, and is able to retain and apply that skill and knowledge in future projects.
The Company
We are a collaborative packaging design agency providing technical consultancy, structural engineering, and creative design services to our clients - creating beautiful and functional packaging for over 25 years.
Working with established global brands, world renowned design agencies, and exciting new start-ups, we bridge the gap between the aesthetic design and styling services offered by most creative design agencies, and the principally technical approach adopted by many manufacturers.
Duties
- Designing and/or modification of structural packaging and related components using CAD software (primarily CATIA), considering technical requirements, consumer appeal, environmental impact, and cost effectiveness, to meet client aesthetic and business goals.
- Providing technical packaging consultancy, including, but not exclusively, the technical analysis of client briefs.
- Managing client’s product data, including quality control.
- Communicating with clients (primarily email, online meetings, and phone based) throughout the development of a given project, to ensure all deliverables are met as required by the client.
- Communicating with other employees (face-to-face, online, email, and phone) to progress a given project and develop job-related skills.
Responsibilities
- Developing knowledge of relevant packaging production processes and materials, both through given training and self-started research.
- Reacting quickly and flexibly to client communications – USP of the business is our flexible availability and fast response.
- Planning and managing a varied workload with a pro-active and flexible attitude.
- Working with commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
- Working overtime when required to meet client deadlines.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential
- 2 years’ experience working in product design, 3D design, technical design, or design engineering - specific structural packaging design training will be provided.
- 2 years’ experience of using CAD software (experience of any CAD system will be acceptable, as full CATIA training will be provided), including the production of technical drawings and design documentation.
- Minimum of undergraduate degree level qualification – preferably at a minimum level of 2:1 although 2:2 candidates will be considered.
- Background in product design, 3D design, technical design, or engineering discipline.
- Full computer literacy.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Technical problem solving.
- The ability to work to tight deadlines.
Desirable
- Experience of product data management.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Suite.
- Familiarity with Adobe Suite.
- Experience of quality control standards.
- Interpreting of technical briefs and concepts.
- Experience using non-CAD 3D modeling software.
- Experience and/or knowledge of packaging technologies, production processes, and materials.
- Experience of management of client accounts.
- Experience of FEA, including the reporting and interpreting of results.
- Occasional travel to the US and other countries for client site visits may be necessary, so the ability to travel.
- Experience within structural packaging design and/or a related production sector (e.g. packaging design agency, other engineering sectors, product design) is desirable, although not essential as extensive training will be given.
Location
- Launch Packaging Design is based in two locations within the UK – Wakefield (the registered office for Launch Packaging Design) and Penarth.
- The place of work for this job will be the Penarth Studio, which is currently located in Penarth, Wales; the applicant would need to be able to work from this location.
Remuneration
- Flexible working available after training period (employer’s discretion).
- 33 days holiday (inclusive of bank holidays).
- Private healthcare (employer’s discretion).
- Annual bonus (after 12 months service and at employer’s discretion).
- Paid Christmas shutdown (employer’s discretion).
How to Apply
- Send a CV, covering letter and (if appropriate) a portfolio to careers@launchpackaging.design.
- For any further information, email careers@launchpackaging.design.
- Applications close on Friday 25th September 2024.
