Background

F W S Carter & Sons Limited is a family business based near Exeter in Devon. Trading under the name of the Greendale Group (www.greendalegroup.com), the family company has interests in fishing, farming, renewable energy and property. The company has experienced significant growth in the last decade with turnover of Circa £65m in 2023. The company’s assets include Greendale Business Park, Greendale Farm Shop, Exmouth Marina, Willowglen Renewables as well as 26 fishing vessels which operate predominantly from either Brixham or Newlyn. The fishing business, trading under the name of Waterdance Ltd (www.waterdance.co.uk), predominantly fishes against its own quota as well as participating in quota swaps during the year. The company also farms 2,000 acres (both arable and pasture) and has a cattle herd of 1,500. Greendale Farm Shop has experienced very rapid growth to achieve a turnover exceeding £8.5m in 2023 with a growing online sales business (www.greendale.com).


The Opportunity

The company is looking to hire an Interim Group Finance Director. The role will be diverse including a range of industries and businesses including fishing, farming, retail, renewable energy, property, leisure and hospitality as well as transport and development.


The family is entrepreneurial and focussed on growth, and the role will be fast paced and challenging. You will be expected to lead the relationships with our banks and auditors as well as providing the financial analysis for the board both when assessing potential new investments alongside reviewing performance of current business activities.


You will manage the groups finance team and you will be fully responsible for ensuring the team delivers timely financial reporting, management accounts and KPIs / metrics. The role will also involve consideration of matters such as succession planning, trusts and you will be expected to be able to offer an initial view on tax-related questions when they arise with support from external experts. You will also think strategically about the company’s debt and coordinate any refinancing, if appropriate. 


The Individual

What you must have:

  • experience demonstrating your ability to work in a challenging, fast paced environment;
  • very strong experience in financial analysis as well as negotiating financing with banks and overseeing audits;
  • strong experience in cash management and financial planning;
  • the ability to think strategically and logically and to be able to think quickly on your feet;
  • excellent organisational and presentational skills with an ability to perceive and make use of the right metrics;
  • the ability to multi-task without losing sight of the bigger picture;
  • strong opinions which you will back up with detailed financial analysis but you will have the ability to compromise and work with the team having a positive attitude towards change;
  • experience in managing change, both to processes and the people they affect;
  • recent commercial application and a strong grasp of commercial considerations;
  • recent experience working at high levels within an organisation and influencing key decision making;
  • experience in managing family succession planning and transitions would be advantageous, though not essential.
  • an accounting qualification ACA, ACCA or CIMA;
  • a degree level qualification; and
  • IT and financial systems implementation and integration experience.


Principle Activities of the role:

  • Financial control and management, management information and end of year accounts.
  • Cash flow and forecasting.
  • Analysing and developing reward and remuneration structures.
  • To contribute actively to the development and implementation of the strategy to deliver the vision.
  • Being responsible for coordinating the preparation and presentation where required of business plans.
  • Ensuring rational, sensible and coherent management accounts are delivered in a timely way.
  • Relationship management with relationship banks, auditors and other key people.
  • Business process improvement.
