Bouygues Travaux Publics (TP) and Laing O’Rourke, two of Europe’s most dynamic engineering and construction specialists, are working together in a joint venture named BYLOR to deliver the main civil engineering works at Hinkley Point C (HPC) worth over £2.8 billion. Bylor have already broken the UK record for the largest continuous concrete pour of 9,000m3 of concrete. Purpose of the role:



The role is responsible for the provision of continuous support (mentoring, training & coaching), engagement and enhancement of quality control within the delivery teams.


Completing surveillance in targeted areas identifying where support is required to site personnel. Ensuring Quality Control is implemented, maintained, and improved within these areas and engaging in initiatives that lead to the successful sustained improvement of quality systems and product delivery.


Additionally, you will be required to carry out surveillance on activities deemed high risked such as Post Tensioning, Active Anchorage and Halfen Channel installation and precast and prefabricated works, ensuring all Processes and Quality Control measures are adhered to.


This role is key to maintaining the Company's reputation for high quality works and a high level of collaboration, vigilance and dedication is crucial to the success of this position. The role involves being a proactive member of the “Joint Quality Improvement team (JQIT)” led by the client organisation.


As you will be a key stakeholder in all quality related activities in the main civil works package this role will be full time and site based, you will need to interact daily with site delivery teams and with the client organisation.


You will be required to identify potential defects at the earliest possible stage, to avoid escalation and remedial works. You will look to implement preventative measures to arrest current trends and prevent reoccurrence. This will be done through positive interactions, briefings and through collaborative workshops, escalating when needed.



Key responsibilities and specific accountabilities:




  • Ensure routine inspection are carried out by site delivery teams in line with the ITP requirements.
  • Ensure works are monitored to identify emerging quality defects and or issues and assist with providing a solution, escalating as appropriate to avoid defects (latent and otherwise).
  • Validate site quality inspection records to ensure thorough checks have been carried out and records have been correctly evidenced and documented.
  • Carry out inspections on suppliers' product as required.
  • Carry out surveillance/inspections on subcontracted products and/or works as required.
  • Review products and materials to ensure that works are being carried out in accordance with established standards, procedures and methods of working.
  • Work as part of the QC Support team to identify where support is required and ensure that it is received.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of technical requirements through mentoring, improving the quality culture on site.
  • Display exemplary quality behaviours in line with the HPC core values and quality commitments. Acting as a role model to peers.
  • Work closely with the technical and delivery teams to improve inspection procedures and processes contributing to continuous sustained improvement.
  • Actively contribute towards initiatives which reduce re-work, targeting an environment of zero defects and right first time.
  • Ensure that all work and inspections are being carried out in a safe manner, acting on any unsafe workplace observations immediately.
  • Keep up to date with procedures and works information, new methods and technology to ensure we maintain the highest standards
  • Competent and experienced in reviewing reports, ITP’s and LTQR’s.
  • Assist in the delivery of targeted quality improvement training, carrying out competency assessments and trade testing.
  • Carry out any reasonable tasks requested by the management chain.


Key Skills & Competencies



Previous experience in the following is required.



  • Possess a broad knowledge or construction techniques specifically within heavy civil engineering and reinforced concrete.
  • Understanding of quality control processes on major projects.
  • Working in a highly regulated industry (preferably nuclear).
  • The ability to communicate is essential as you will be responsible for attending meetings, liaising with the client, facilitating and presenting on quality matters, to project teams and suppliers.
  • A high level of organisation and the ability to multi-task, as you will have the responsibility for planning and completing many tasks simultaneously.
  • Flexibility, motivation, commitment, and can-do attitude.
  • 3D model viewing/operating (preferably Trimble Connect).
  • Reviewing inspection reports and reporting on all findings.
  • Microsoft suite specifically Excel and Power Point

Previous experience in the following would be desirable but not essential.



  • Qualified in Auditing.
  • Working with ISO 9001:2015.
  • Post Tensioning Works.
  • Mentoring and coaching of junior engineers.
  • Experience in working with LTQR’s.
  • Quality Surveillance or Improvement roles.
  • Previous experience in delivering training.
  • Understanding of CDM regulations.

All positions within Bylor are employed directly with either Laing O’Rourke or Bouygues Travaux Public and include competitive salaries, private medical insurance, company pension schemes and annual holiday allowance. Some grades will also include a company car allowance.


Unless stated otherwise all positions are based at Hinkley Point C in Somerset.
