Location: Fully on-site/hybrid 3 days at our GivEnergy UK Head Office in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire (ST5 9HX) + 2 days WFH. You must have the ability to reliably commute, or plan to relocate before starting work

Schedule: Permanent, 37.5 hours per week. Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm (flexible)

Experience Level: Due to the nature of the role, a high level of experience in a similar role is preferred

Salary: £60K - £70k pa DOE (plus performance bonus scheme)

We’re looking for a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to join our growing R&D Team. The role will involve the understanding and analysis of firmware and algorithm requirements and the latest IoT Security Standards. You will be responsible for the specifications, design, implementation, and testing of hardware products that interface with our cloud software.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the design and development of firmware under the guidance of the Head of R&D according to the needs of the project.
  • Identifying scope of assigned work and provides a factual initial estimate.
  • Executing in a fast-paced delivery mode, focused on delivering tasks to meet product requirements.
  • Performing root cause analysis of assigned software defects and implements solutions.
  • Working independently and also closely with the project team, other teams to engage with colleagues to learn, contribute, brainstorm, converge on technical designs and discussions.
  • Following SDLC processes, maintaining code quality by leading on best practices, code reviews and automated testing.
  • Produce documentation to capture all stages of work as per process
  • Mentoring & coaching more junior engineers

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science.
  • High level of experience in a similar firmware engineering role, proficiency in embedded C and/or C++
  • Solid experience in microprocessor or SOC development – PIC, STM32, ARM etc.
  • Experience of using peripherals such as UART, RS232, RS485, I2C, SPI, Ethernet, BLE, Wifi, etc.
  • Proven experience on developing firmware with RTOS, e.g. FreeRTOS, RT-Linux, Threadx, etc.
  • Hands on development with IoT infrastructure, MQTT, Protobuf, cryptography, secure boot, etc.
  • Bare metal driver, BSP, board bring up.
  • Basic knowledge of electronics e.g. reading schematics, using test equipment such as DVM and oscilloscope etc.
  • Full software development life cycle experience including using git, Confluence and Linear.
  • Experience of testing frameworks for automated unit, functional and integration testing.
  • Confidence to tackle complex technical issues.
  • Understanding of electricity fundamentals (voltage, current, power) as well as electrical technologies like inverters, batteries and solar power will be advantageous.
