Lightricity is seeking a Space Engineer to develop assembly and test methods and processes, and to automate processes for the integration and testing of ultra-efficient space solar cells. The successful candidate should enjoy hands-on activities and have a relevant degree in space, electrical or mechanical engineering (MSc or PhD desirable). Experience working with space-grade components or systems (e.g. Cubesats) is desirable but not essential. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and improve processes for the quality control and testing (mechanical, opto-electrical, thermal) of space solar cells and modules
  • Solar cell integration into rigid and flexible modules or blankets
  • Develop automated testing and packaging processes (assembly and encapsulation)
  • Contribute to the company’s R&D projects
  • Write technical documentation and specifications

Required skills/experience:

  • Soldering/welding knowledge
  • Knowledge about solar cells and characterisation procedures
  • Experience working in laboratories and/or workshops
  • Ability to work under own initiative and to manage workload appropriately to meet tight deadlines
  • A team player, with good communication skills
  • Eligible to work in the UK

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Experience working in clean rooms
  • Practical soldering/welding experience
  • PCB design and fabrication
  • Experience with solar cells (incl. compound semiconductors) and/or modules
  • Experience in lamination and/or encapsulation processes
  • Familiarity with Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) principles
