Key Responsibilities


The following information provides an overview of the skills, qualities, and qualifications needed for this role.

  • This role is in the Sky Data [Customer / Product / Viewing / Regulatory] family.

  • Act as a technical authority and subject matter expert for the teams in your area

  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to ensure that quality is high and consistent across all individuals and teams

  • Lead and represent the team on a portfolio of work

  • Provide technical support and assistance to the Head of Department and Data Engineering Team Lead

  • Ensure the correct tools and technologies are being used and that their use is both effective and in-line with broader department practices

  • Focus on the domain and prioritise tasks that ensure the domain meets its objectives and goals

  • Drive and enhance an agile approach to development and delivery

  • Continuously implement, promote, and improve our ways of working, defining best practice, frameworks and processes

  • Be a first class engineer and expert in the domain, capable of deep diving into implementation details of components and features across the technology stacks

  • Be at the forefront of significant technology initiatives from inception to successful deployment

  • Manage solution architects and work closely with Data Engineering, other architecture teams and wider technology communities

  • Look ahead and drive adoption of advanced features and new capabilities

  • Create and build frameworks to support CI/CD pipelines and future capability

  • Work in partnership with Sky Data Architecture to simplify and modernise our data landscape, and take the lead at Directorate level to embed our reference architecture in UK Data

  • Provide leadership to help rationalise our Data Architecture and maximise efficiency; this will include driving the decommissioning of legacy systems and the convergence of analytical, reporting and lab marts and layers

  • Work within the broader department to influence the technical agenda and drive engineering excellence. Act as a champion and ambassador to foster Sky-wide collaboration and accessibility to data.

  • Provide excellent people and technical leadership for Solution Architects, and drive collaboration across all Departments and Engineering teams

Key Skills:

  • Proven experience in development of data products as per requirements

  • Expert and demonstrable technical background in data tools and process

  • Proven experience working with large, complex datasets in a cloud environment such as BigQuery

  • An extensive data analysis & interpretation background in evaluation of data gathered from various sources, helping key partners understand and maximise the potential of Sky’s data

  • Exceptional communication & social skills, and have a demonstrable ability to influence technical decisions in a fast-paced commercial environment

  • Self-motivator with energy and drive for continuous improvement and a focus on delivering results

  • Proven ability to influence technical decisions in a fast-moving commercial environment

  • A minimum of 8 years data engineering experience

  • Excellent GCP/Python and/or Node JS 8+ knowledge

  • Experience defining and implementing standards & quality assurance

  • CI/CD experience (ideally with Jenkins)

  • Experience of transforming teams in ways of working to latest methodologies

  • A deep understanding of Sky Data models across Customer, Viewing, and Network domains

  • Subject matter expert in the data of source systems such as CRM, Billing & Contact Technology

  • Experience of collaborating with stakeholders to deliver highly complicated Data Products
