What's on offer?

What will you be doing?


You'll be leading the category strategy formulation and execution for building materials for this leading procurement consultancy. These building materials contracts form a major national flagship framework agreement worth in the region of £200m annually, predominantly accessed by clients in the social housing and local government sectors. Building materials in this instance covers predominantly repairs & maintenance materials, things like doors, windows, hardware, kitchens, bathrooms, tiling, flooring, spare parts etc and circa 80% of this job's time is spent developing the offering in this space, with around 10% focusing on construction materials and 10% on exploring new markets. This framework lasts for 4 years, and they are already 18 months into it, so work has already begun on the next one and it's an ever evolving market as new products and innovations come into play. You'll be leading a team of 8, via two direct reports, one of which is well establish and very self-sufficient, the other of whom is relatively new to the role so will benefit from more in the way of coaching and mentoring. You'll become the subject matter expert for building materials, talking at a strategic level with C-Suite stakeholders in client organisations, as well as internally across the wider business. Top deliverables for the first 12 months include: developing the team into a high performing function as there are currently a number of new faces; continuing to build and maintain strong relationships with strategic suppliers; and provide excellent support to the key account management team to ensure complete client satisfaction.

You'll be joining a successful, profitable private sector consultancy business that work extensively with public sector clients and are seen as a sector leading authority in their space. This is a business with a proven track record of developing and promoting internally, providing both funding and support to obtain key professional qualifications as well as internal development planning. They promote a culture of inclusion, collaboration and support, actively encouraging conversation and problem sharing. The leadership team are engaged, approachable and personable and the line manager for this position is vastly experienced in the space, allowing them to provide a strong support foundation.


What do you need to bring to the table?


To be successful in this role it's expected you'll be able to demonstrate the majority of the following skills and experience:


  • Ideally you'll be from a building materials procurement background - this could be from a builder, merchant, social housing/local council background. Although this is a preference it isn't essential and applications will be considered from other backgrounds too
  • Any previous experience of procuring to public sector rules and regulations would be advantageous but isn't a deal breaker
  • Proven experience in defining and executing category strategies
  • Previous line management experience
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Proven experience in leading complex negotiations to deliver value for money
  • Degree educated or equivalent
  • Willing and able to be onsite in Warrington 3 days a week
