The Post

The post holder will assist both the Head Performance Swim Coach and High Performance Swim Coaches by providing coaching and administration support to talented swimmers at the Scottish National Swimming Academy, in conjunction with the performance development staff of Scottish Swimming and the University of Stirling Sports Development Service. There is an expectation that this programme will produce winning individuals and team performances at the highest levels of student and mainstream sport. In particular, the post holder will provide support to the wider coaching team to recruit and develop swimmers capable of delivering success at national and international levels of competition.

The post holder will be required to assist in the design, implementation and review of a swim performance programme that integrates with the academic and lifestyle commitments of squad members. In addition the post holder will be required to integrate with the Scottish Swimming pathway programmes, providing clear progression and pathway for swimmers. The programme should consist of appropriate talent identification & swimmer recruitment, coaching, competitions, sport science, and athlete support services.

Alongside the performance coaching team, the role will also be expected to be support discussions with external agencies and contribute towards shared ambitions and goals in the development of sporting excellence. The post holder’s line manager will be the High Performance Swim Coach and the post holder will be supported by Scottish Swimming’s National Coach.

Additional Information / Special Conditions

This post will require flexibility in working hours to meet operational needs. Some evening and weekend work is required. However the post-holder will generally be expected to work midweek from 9am to 5pm each day. Whilst the majority of work will be undertaken on the University campus there will be occasions when travel is required.

Description of Duties

  • Assist the organisation, delivery and monitoring of the “High Performance 2” swim programme as designated by the High Performance Swim Coach in conjunction with the performance development staff of Scottish Swimming and the University of Stirling
  • Lead on the organisation, delivery and monitoring of the “Sprint Squad” swim programme in conjunction with the Head Performance Swim Coach and the High Performance Swim Coaches
  • Contribute to the creation of a world-class daily training environment at the University of Stirling in conjunction with the sportscotland Institute of Sport, Scottish Swimming and the Faculty of Health Sciences & Sport
  • Support on the recruitment process of high performance swimmers, liaising with the athletes and their parents to attract them into the Stirling University swimming programme
  • Provide cover where appropriate or necessary for the High Performance 1 squad on a needs basis
  • As part of the Swimming High Performance Coaching Team, contribute to the successful delivery of the Scottish National Swimming Programme
  • To attend the key camps and swimming meets across the year
  • Promote and uphold University values through personal example and working practices
  • Provide administrative support to the swim programme

Essential Criteria

The post-holder will be a self-motivated, creative and flexible individual who is capable of working in a varied and challenging environment.

Education

  • Level 3 or above or equivalent overseas award

Skills/Training/Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the key attributes required to work with talented athletes
  • Demonstrable mentoring experience
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills
  • Excellent inter-personal, communication and motivational skills
  • Appropriate IT skills, competent with MS products

Experience

  • Substantial experience of working within a swim coaching programme with talented swimmers
  • An understanding of athlete development and key transitions
  • Experience of working with multi-disciplinary sports science and sports medicine practitioners
  • Experience of working with national level swimmers
  • Studious nature towards the wider swimming world & demonstrable knowledge of such

  • The nature of the duties require flexibility around work patterns including the need to work unsocial hours
  • Dedication, determination and a dynamic outlook & willingness to go above and beyond
  • Satisfactory Basic Disclosure certificate

Desirable Criteria

Education

  • Degree in sport related subject
  • First Aid Qualification

Skills/Training/Knowledge

  • Knowledge and experience of working with talented swimmers

Experience

  • Knowledge & experience of leading a swimming performance programme beyond British level
  • Experience of working within the Higher Education Sector
  • Experience of leading a swim programme at a club or within HE setting

  • Current Driving Licence
