JOB TITLE: Head of Data Engineering

SALARY: £124,653 - £146,650

LOCATION(S): Manchester or Bristol

HOURS: Full time

WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at one of our locations listed above.

About this opportunity

We have a great opportunity for a Head of Data Engineering to be a senior level data expert, technical expert and thought leader.

Working in the Enterprise Data Provisioning Platform, you can help shape the Group's ambition by enabling the bank to gain value from data by providing safe and efficient Group wide data capabilities and services.

The sheer pace and scale of change taking place in the data space means there couldn't be a more exciting time to join us. With a modern technology toolset at our fingertips, we'll build even more opportunities to get the most from our data.

What you'll be doing

We are a large enterprise developing a state-of-the-art data mesh architecture on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to facilitate decentralised, self-serve data products across various teams.

This role involves driving the data product and engineering vision, setting standards, and solving the complex data and technical challenges. You'll be an advocate for best practice and agile methodologies and be passionate about advancing the state of data products and technology. Day to day you'll be:

  1. Influencing the strategic direction of the organisation by mentoring data engineering teams, and ensuring the delivery of robust, scalable, and innovative data products
  2. Providing deep technical expertise in data engineering
  3. Owning the design, development, and maintenance of data products, ensuring high-quality delivery and alignment with architectural governance
  4. Providing application-level support for data products in live environments, ensuring their reliability and performance
  5. Defining both data and engineering standards, collaborating closely with architecture and platform teams
  6. Advising engineering teams and senior leadership on data technologies, standard practices, and strategy
  7. Identifying emerging trends to drive innovation and ensure a competitive edge
  8. Aligning long-term data strategy with business objectives
  9. Evaluating and selecting new tools, platforms, and technologies to improve both efficiency and data quality
  10. Supporting recruitment, mentoring, coaching, and training of junior data engineers, helping them grow and develop their skills
What skills you'll need:
  1. Data engineering - Applying best practices to optimise data management processes and architecture across the landscape
  2. Cloud Platform - Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Azure or AWS
  3. Data migrations - Leading and running a cloud-based data migration to ensure a seamless transition and minimal disruption
  4. Data literacy - Communicating with data confidently and effectively to drive decision-making. Promote cross-functional collaboration across the organisation to advance data accessibility and literacy
  5. Data modelling and design - Designing and implementing data models and schemas to ensure efficient data storage, retrieval and interoperability
  6. Values - Forward-thinking, capable of delivering solutions that meet business and customer needs. An early adopter of change, driving organisational transformation at pace with a growth mindset
  7. Leadership - Foster an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued, irrespective of their background. Inspire others to achieve their full potential by demonstrating your experience to offer valuable insights, strategic guidance, and promote effective problem-solving
In addition, any experience of these would be useful:
  1. Experience in GCP services, including BigQuery, Data Fusion, Cloud Composer, IAM, and others
  2. Ability to define objectives and measure metrics
About working for us

Our focus is to ensure we're inclusive every day, building an organisation that reflects modern society and celebrates diversity in all its forms. We want our people to feel that they belong and can be their best, regardless of background, identity, or culture. We were one of the first major organisations to set goals on diversity in senior roles, create a menopause health package, and a dedicated Working with Cancer initiative. And it's why we especially welcome applications from under-represented groups. We're disability confident. So, if you'd like reasonable adjustments to be made to our recruitment processes, just let us know.

We also offer a wide-ranging benefits package, which includes:
  1. A generous pension contribution of up to 15%
  2. An annual performance-related bonus
  3. Share schemes including free shares
  4. Benefits you can adapt to your lifestyle, such as discounted shopping
  5. Up to 30 days holiday, with bank holidays on top
  6. A range of wellbeing initiatives and generous parental leave policies.
Want to do amazing work, that's interesting and makes a difference to millions of people? Join our journey.

At Lloyds Banking Group, we're driven by a clear purpose; to help Britain prosper. Across the Group, our colleagues are focused on making a difference to customers, businesses and communities. With us you'll have a key role to play in shaping the financial services of the future, whilst the scale and reach of our Group means you'll have many opportunities to learn, grow and develop.

We keep your data safe. So, we'll only ever ask you to provide confidential or sensitive information once you have formally been invited along to an interview or accepted a verbal offer to join us which is when we run our background checks. We'll always explain what we need and why, with any request coming from a trusted Lloyds Banking Group person.

We're focused on creating a values-led culture and are committed to building a workforce which reflects the diversity of the customers and communities we serve.
