Chair for the Board of Directors

Manchester, United Kingdom British Mountaineering Council-1 Full time

Formed in 1944, the  British Mountaineering Council (BMC) was established to be open to all and speak on behalf of mountaineers, climbers and hillwalkers, protecting spaces and supporting them in their activities. Nearly 80 years later, more and more people are experiencing the enjoyment of being in the outdoors and recognising the benefits of active lifestyles for mental and physical health and wellbeing.

An experienced and effective leader, the Chair will be able to motivate and bring the best out of a diverse and passionate group of Directors and enable the Board to deliver its strategic role and provide effective governance for the BMC. The role will appeal to those who recognise the well-being benefits of active participation in outdoor activities, and who share our care and concern for the natural environment.

The role provides an opportunity to gain satisfaction from contributing to decision-making and scrutiny at a time when the BMC is seeking to grow its membership and enhance its services, whilst championing the environment in the context of increased outdoor participation. The successful candidate will also join at a time of increased focus following the Olympic success at Paris 2024 and planned Paralympic participation for Los Angeles 2028.

Candidates are expected to have a strong affinity for the work and responsibilities of the BMC, irrespective of whether or not they are existing members.

For further details, including the role description, person specification, and information on how to apply, please visit our website via the button below.

Candidates wishing to express their interest should submit a CV (including comprehensive details of key achievements and responsibilities) along with a covering letter which fully addresses the competencies outlined in the role description and person specification.

The closing date for applications is 5.00 pm on Monday 06 January 2025.
