We're looking for an exceptional Developer to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Developer the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Your world of expertise

This role is within the Analysis, Visualisation and Data (AVD) team, who are responsible for developing, maintaining and supporting the scientific visualisation and analysis software used in research and operations in the Met Office.

We mainly work in the public domain, owning the SciTools project on GitHub and contributing to a range of open-source projects. The primary programming language we use is Python, with libraries in a variety of languages contributing to the capabilities we provide.

We are evolving our tool sets to provide capabilities to the scientific research and operational meteorology communities. These capabilities are part of the Met Office making best use of our supercomputer to work at the forefront of weather and climate science for protection, prosperity and well-being. We will help you develop your skills, express yourself and make a real impact.

This is a unique opportunity to work with a cutting-edge development team that is creating vital tools on which Met Office science depends.

Your key duties

  • Develop software to meet user needs

  • Follow best practice guidelines and help to improve those guidelines

  • Write clean, secure and well-tested code

  • Coach and mentor more junior colleagues

  • Operate the services you build and identify issues in production

As our Developer, your total reward package will be up to £49,806 annually, which includes:

  • £33,794 base pay

  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%

  • Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) you will be paid £2,200 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2024 until September 2025 in your monthly pay

  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

  1. Demonstrable skills in Python software development (Expert by nature)

  2. Proven ability of designing, implementing and delivering quality software (Live and breathe it))

  3. Follow best practice and apply modern standards and guide others to do so (Keep evolving)

  4. Good communication skills that adapt to all level of stakeholders (Force for good)

  5. Ability to work as part of a team, leading meetings, coaching and mentoring more junior colleagues (Better together)
