Artist in Residence
Charterhouse, one of the UK’s top independent boarding schools, is seeking to appoint a versatile Artist-in-Residence for the period between January and December 2025 to help broaden our students’ artistic and cultural horizons. We are looking for an inspiring practising artist in any creative discipline with a passion for developing creativity and inquiry among young people as well as pursuing their own practice. The post would be ideal for a postgraduate or practising artist with a range of creative skills, who has studied a degree within a relevant field, and who has an interest in teaching.
Art at Charterhouse is taught by staff who are practising artists and believe it is important to make time to continue their practice. This and their constant cultural enrichment by keeping abreast of the latest exhibitions and trends are fundamental to the quality of their teaching. The department is led by the Head of Department, two full-time art teachers, one 0.7 textiles teacher and three part-time technicians. The subject areas covered are drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, computer generated digital imagery, photography and film.
Person Specification:
- A passion for artistic creativity in all its forms, and the ability to share it with young people
- Experience and interest in working with children of secondary school age
- A strong interest in equality, diversity and inclusion
- Ability to engage with people from a variety of backgrounds
- Understanding of the importance of safeguarding young people
- A desire to develop their own Studio practice and allow students to share in the process
- Ideally, an artist who has developed their practice through postgraduate research.
Job Description
The duties of the Artist-in-Residence are outlined as follows. However, there is considerable scope for the successful candidate to tailor their contributions to Charterhouse in response to their own skills and interests. (For example, if a candidate were to be interested in secondary teaching in the longer term, Charterhouse could give support in developing an appropriate range of teaching skills.)
- Working with the Director of Art in leading appropriate academic extension activities.
- Supporting the Director of Wellbeing and Inclusion in promoting EDI and helping to lead the EDI Pupil Action group alongside the Director of Wellbeing and Inclusion.
- Supporting GCSE, A Level and International Baccalaureate students in the development of their portfolios and coursework, as directed by the Head(s) of Department.
- Delivery of workshops to Art scholars and other pupils across the age range exploring a wide range of aspects of EDI in Art.
- Helping to supervise pupils’ independent work during open-Studio sessions.
- Give workshops and talks, including those exploring aspects of EDI in Art, culminating the year with a solo exhibition.
Terms and Conditions
A salary of £12,000 is payable for the period of employment (32 weeks of term-time; 12 hours per week). Precise hours will be determined through mutual agreement but flexible working in a large busy boarding school will be appreciated.
Once the application form has been submitted, applicants will be asked provide at least 15 digital examples of their work via a suitable platform i.e., a website, WeTransfer etc.
