Senior Project Manager

Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom Equal Approach Ltd Full time

Base Location: Flexible Scotland | We're proud to offer a Flexible First approach to work, and these roles are no exception. We will however need your base 'home' location to be one of our SSE offices across Scotland (Inverness/Aberdeen/Perth/Glasgow). We would also be interested in applications from individuals in the Western Isles.

If you live outside of Scotland, we can offer relocation assistance.

Salary: £55,200 – £83,000 + car / car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible First options available

The role

The SSEN Transmission Delivery Team is currently recruiting for Senior Project Managers to join our team and be part of the exciting journey in delivering a number of new High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Megaprojects throughout Scotland. These projects are being delivered under the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework for 2030 to directly facilitate Scotland's ambitions to meet Net-Zero.

We have adopted an innovative delivery strategy, with a disaggregated package delivery model, meaning our Delivery team is comparable to the remit of an EPC Contractor. We have opportunities for Senior Project Managers to manage our onshore based civil and Converter building packages. This will involve directly managing our multi-disciplinary supply chain partners as well as working alongside our Design and HVDC Converter Equipment package teams throughout the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase in 2025, and then into the Delivery phase.

The scale of our portfolio of projects is continuing to grow in the coming years, meaning there are opportunities for career progression within the business for candidates.

You will

  1. Be accountable to the Business for the safety, health, and wellbeing of all personnel, and for environmental aspects of those Transmission project activities being managed, including compliance with our framework behaviour charter and the CDM regulations.
  2. Plan, Monitor, and Control projects or packages in line with Project Execution Plans to ensure that these are executed to cost, schedule and quality. Key focus areas will be: schedule optimisation, constructability, and the management of interfaces between packages.
  3. Have budgetary and commercial responsibilities, including contract negotiation, contract awards, and NEC contract management; ensuring that any disputes are escalated as appropriate for resolution.
  4. Ensure the project adheres to our Safety Management Systems, best practices, and the SSE Large Capital Projects (LCP) Governance processes.
  5. Provide guidance and demonstrate our core values. Manage teams, ensuring these are highly capable, well-motivated, and organised to deliver consistent excellence. This will require regular site presence throughout the delivery phase, requiring candidates to travel.

You have

  1. A proven track record of safely delivering complex and/or high value packages or projects to cost, schedule and quality in the Transmission, Construction, Energy, Civil, or other regulated industry. We are interested in candidates with complex buildings / fit out experience – such as from the nuclear, healthcare, or pharmaceutical sectors.
  2. People management experience and a passion for safety, with an understanding of project management methodology and practice to lead a multi-discipline team to success; coupled with an engineering, construction, or project management qualification / degree or equivalent experience.
  3. Engineering or construction knowledge and understanding, including associated environmental and safety legislation e.g. CDM 2015 regulations combined with Contractual management experience (NEC3 experience is preferable), with the ability to forecast and control costs as well as develop and manage integrated project programmes.
  4. Experience of the governance, reporting, and management requirements for project and/or programmes of work in a regulated environment, with prior budget responsibilities, ideally £50m+, and confident in managing multiple project execution issues whilst analysing and prioritising key delivery risks and issues for the project on an ongoing basis.
  5. Experience managing and delivering pre-construction or Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) scope of works. Experience of successfully engaging with Contractors in advance of construction to achieve the greatest value for money, programme certainty and de-risking of project delivery.
