This is your chance to work on projects that redefine rail safety and performance across the UK.As a Systems Engineer in the ETCS OBU portfolio, you will get the opportunity to work on complex, high-profile projects that push the boundaries of rail technology and are responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining systems and solutions that meet the needs of our clients and users within the Main Line Rail domain. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to understand requirements, implement solutions, and ensure the scalability, testability, reliability, and performance of our products and solutions.On the ETCS OBU portfolio, you will work across a range of projects at different stages of the engineering lifecycle—from initial bids through to final project close-out. Fitting ETCS systems to existing rolling stock is a complex engineering challenge, and your railway expertise will be key to ensuring robust solutions. From design through to placing units into service, you will apply best engineering practices to deliver safe, compliant, and high-quality outcomes.This is a hybrid role working a minimum of two days per week from our site in the office, which may be Birmingham or London depending on the selected candidates locationKey Responsibilities:Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:Collaborate with project managers, designers, customers and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and translate them into technical specificationsIdentify and address technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and other engineering issuesWork collaboratively with other engineering disciplines and other stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of the projectUnderstand and follow the project delivery processes, methodologies, and use the defined tools as set out in the Hitachi Rail GTS UK Management System and the project specific Engineering Management PlansDesign and develop solutions using industry best practiceConduct User Needs Analysis and contribute to the development of the concept solutionCarry out requirements capture, requirements analysis and requirements managementParticipate in Value Engineering and contributing to technical trade-off studies evaluating alternative design configurations and functional featuresGenerate System Specifications using relevant modelling and design techniquesProduce interface designs and specificationsProduce test plans, specifications and scripts in collaboration with IVVQ engineers and testersSupport Work Package Managers with timely provision of status, accurate measurement of progress and forecasting of remaining work and by identifying change, variation, risk and opportunity to the work package manager wherever the scope of works is impactedTechnical Skills And ExperienceExperience in Systems development, with a strong understanding of Systems Engineering principles and methodologiesAbility to use design tools to produce complex designsSomeone who understand the operational realities of the UK rail network and have worked within its standards and processes. Experience of working in an engineering environment and understanding of engineering delivery methodologiesExperience with train systems, integration, or retrofit projects will set you apart from other candidatesFamiliarity with Network Rail’s governance, assurance, and technical requirements is preferable. Understanding of configuration controlHuman SkillsStrong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issuesKeep up to date with the latest technologies, tools, and trends in systems developmentExcellent communication skills in all forms and at all levelsCollaborative and strong working within a multi-disciplined teamExcellent stakeholder managementWhat To ExpectWe aim to complete a one-stage interview process, which will be held in person at our office.
