The Opportunity

We are currently hiring for an Underwriter to join our Construction Underwriting team based in Manchester. 

The QBE Construction and Engineering team insure some of the largest contractors in the UK, along with offering specific insurance for large UK and European construction projects. We have an appetite to insure a wide range of risks across the construction sector, ranging from the construction of buildings, to the installation of machinery, through to heavier civil engineering works.

Your new role

  • Contribute to the delivery of the annual business plan for the respective business unit by making appropriate decisions.
  • Adhere to underwriting standards, instructions, and good practice to minimise risk and maximise efficiency.
  • Ensure the recording and measurement of insurance risks, to ensure accuracy and good practice.
  • Establish strong relationships with stakeholders including customers, brokers, business partners and colleagues, to maximise influence and achieve business objectives.
  • Continually develop expertise and technical knowledge through identifying and implementing appropriate learning and development activities
  • Perform underwriting activities in accordance with all legal and regulatory requirements to ensure obligations are met.
  • Develop knowledge of market dynamics and market cycles to be able to support business performance.
  • Motivate and coach team members to ensure the relevant knowledge and expertise is shared for their continuing personal and professional development.

About you

  • Thorough understanding of class specific underwriting and reinsurance knowledge
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment
  • Capability to analyse and interpret data
  • Intermediate level understanding of relevant software, including Excel and other departmental software packages.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of the construction industry
