Energy Projects Lawyer

Edinburgh/Glasgow
Brief
Our Projects Group team is expanding and we are currently looking to recruit a talented transactional (non-contentious) energy projects lawyer with 6-10 years' PQE to join our team. This is an opportunity focus on renewable energy projects primarily across the UK but also internationally - the preference is for the candidate to join the Scottish team, but all of our UK office locations would be considered . A number of our major client relationships, and the projects on which we advise, in the energy sector are led by partners based in our offices in Scotland. The role will primarily involve working with those partners but also with our wider national team.
Did you know?
We have over 350 energy and infrastructure specialists globally - the largest in the world of its kind.
Our Team
As we have noted above, a number of the key client relationships and projects are led by partners based in Scotland. Our Projects team works on a national basis and those Scotland-based partners work on a day-to-day basis with lawyers across our UK and international network. Our team is listed as Tier 1 in the Legal 500 in the Energy (excl. oil & gas) category for Scotland. Similarly, our team is listed as Tier 1 by Chambers & Partners in the Energy (excl. oil & gas) and Projects categories for Scotland.
As a 'commercially minded firm that understands the market and key issues', Pinsent Masons LLP is well-positioned to advise a host of pension and infrastructure funds on a variety of low carbon assets and projects, as well as traditional oil and gas clients engaging with renewables and energy transition work. While onshore and offshore wind continues to be a flagship component of the team's work, the firm is also active in district heating, battery storage and landmark hydrogen and pumped hydro projects. Ian McCarlie and Ronan Lambe co-lead the practice, with the former largely active across the entire renewable projects space, and the latter recognised for his specialism in power purchase agreements and emerging technologies. Ian and Ronan (who are Edinburgh based) work closely with a number of partners across our Scottish Offices on energy matters. These include Jennifer Ballantyne, who is chiefly focused on the property, planning and environmental aspects of energy developments, and often works alongside Gary McGovern who is another expert in planning matters. Nicholas Carlin 'is a very experienced construction and offshore wind lawyer and a particular expert in turbine supply contracts', while Gillian Frew takes the lead on financing instructions.
What our Clients say:
" They have been involved in this project since the very start, from the early stages of procurement up to Financial Close, and have worked hand in glove with us throughout. They brought with them a variety of experiences and lessons learned on other projects which they shared, and applied to the work they did for us. They have drawn on this experience to suggest solutions to issues we faced; this was very useful. " ( Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm Limited )
The Candidate Required
The team's pipeline is such that our vacancy would best suit a candidate well versed in energy related transactional (non-contentious) work.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity of exposure to energy projects work across a wide range of sectors, both across the UK and internationally, so experience and flexibility in that regard is an advantage. Experience in the energy sector in particular would be desirable.
The successful candidate will:
- have gained experience in a large commercial firm, in-house legal team, regulator or government department;
- be a team player, able to forge strong working relationships with colleagues in an agile environment;
- be enthusiastic and engaged and keen to develop their career and contribute to the success of a fantastic team;
- be technically strong and exercise good commercial judgment; and
- have the interpersonal skills necessary for this client-facing role.
- the opportunity to be involved in work in the very best national and international energy projects work;
- developing on-going relationships with an existing client base as well as pitching for new opportunities; and
- developing close working relationships as part of an international team.
- We are a market leading, dynamic and growing global team who work together to produce outstanding results for our clients. You will have exposure to the best quality work and top global clients.
- You will get early responsibility and opportunities to develop key client relationships.
- We invest in our team and have a first-class training and career development programme. Our training reflects our market-leading position and focuses on helping you to develop as a specialist with valuable sector knowledge and the ability to deliver \"best in class\" services.
- We look after our people - we cultivate an inclusive culture for all our people to develop and thrive. We provide tailored resources, support networks and a culture of care to help colleagues balance their work and home lives so that they have a sense of mental and physical wellbeing.
