Plant Breeder - Field Trials £c30k + Benefits

A plant breeder or plant scientist or plant field trials specialist is urgently required for the responsibility of the management and field operations for a breeding programme and seed production programme for a leader in their field. As a plant breeder and with an active interest in field trials you will assist with the purification and seed production of plants and spring plant breeders seed.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Field operations, husbandry and harvest
  • Crop assessment and evaluation - including the production of scoring records.
  • Liaison with other departments within the company, particularly with regard to shared field equipment and facilities.
  • Safe operation of agricultural and trial equipment and machinery.
  • Liaise with farmers regarding the provision of trial and seed production fields.
  • Manage supply store and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • A wide range of activities within seed production team including:

o Seed preparation

o Drilling

o Identifying botanical characteristics

o Selection

o Harvesting

o Cleaning

o Sampling

This role requires a flexible approach including working outside normal office hours during the peak season.

Must have a car and full driving licence

  • QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Qualified to BSc, MSc PhD in Plant Science, Plant Breeding or Agriculture or arable farming qualifications
  • Industry-relevant experience in breeding, plant field trials or plant physiology, plant biochemistry
  • Thorough knowledge and experience of arable farming and the agricultural industry
  • Understanding of the principles and requirements of the plant breeding programmes
  • PA2 Spray operator certificate, PA4 Granular application certificate. Full training can be given.

Due to the nature of the job, occasional travel to the head office will be required therefore a full driving licence is essential.
