Background

TheUK has invested £99m in the National Satellite Test Facility(NSTF), located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Harwell,Oxfordshire. This facility, along with the existing facilities,will provide a world class set of co-located facilities for thefinal integration and testing of space payloads and satellites usedfor Earth Observation, Astronomy or even to explore otherastronomical bodies such as the Moon, or Mars. The facilities willhave the capability to conduct Vibration, Acoustic, Thermal,Pyroshock, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Antenna testingwithin cleanroom conditions to ensure that they can survive boththe journey into space and the harsh environment withinit. 

JobDescription

We arelooking for an Engineer to work within the RAL Space EnvironmentalTest Division. The role will involve working as part of a smallteam to support the operation of the cleanrooms and underpinninginfrastructure. The facilities are spread across three buildingsand include multiple cleanrooms, fixed cranes and mobile handlingequipment. You will be split between working in a cleanroomenvironment and an office or light industrial environment,depending on the task at hand.

STFC has acentralised maintenance function who will perform scheduled andreactive maintenance on most of the building systems required tooperate the facilities. You will work closely with them to ensuremaintenance is scheduled at a time where disruption of servicesprovided to users is minimised, and to ensure they have appropriateand safe access to the areas they need. Where other maintenanceservices are required, these are arranged using third partycontractors. 

Theduties and responsibilities are asfollows:

CleanroomOperation

  • Performmeasurements of cleanroom parameters as part of a contaminationcontrol program, look for trends in the data, highlight whereanomalies are observed and investigate thecause.
  • Support general cleanroom operationsincluding provision of basic training, cleanliness audits andsafety audits.
  • Order and Project cleanroomconsumable use to ensure the appropriate amount of stockholding.
  • Support the movement of items undertest, such as instruments and satellites, betweenfacilities. 

Generalbuilding and logisticssupport

  • Assist in acceptingdeliveries and movement within the building of large itemsutilising forklifts and at times,cranes.
  • Liaise with STFC Estates Maintenanceteams, internal projects and test campaigns to plan servicing ofplant, arranging shutdowns for works to be carriedout.
  • Provide short safety briefings forcontractors and users of the facilities.
  • Workwith suppliers to arrange maintenance and calibration ofsystems.

PersonalSpecification

  • Demonstrablededication to safe working
  • Experience of useof multiple software packages, including Word, Excel
  • Excellent logistical skills and resourcemanagement
  • Demonstrated teamwork andcollaboration skills as well as having excellent communicationskills, both written and verbal
  • Goodunderstanding of underpinning building services andinfrastructure
  • Ability to produce technicalprocedures in line with the Quality Systemrequirements
  • Ability to produce sophisticatedtechnical and safety risk assessments in-line with legislation andreview assessments produced byothers
  • Experience in the management of staffand contractors.
