My client is a well-funded, exciting new player in the commodities trading space - specifically Steel. An independent commodity trading firm, they're headquartered in the heart of London with an office in Middle East. This new business, headed up by an experienced, well-connected MD with generations of experience and relationships in commodities, has credible ambitions (demonstrable growth after only 2 years, with turnover already £50 million); their mission is to source steel products globally, whilst also offering finance & distribution to a mainly European customer base which have seen distribution contracts surge as a result of dwindling European production.


Having now set up offices in London with a fledgling team of 4, they are now seeking their first Financial Controller, with a route to FD within 2 years, creation of in-house finance team - and generous annual bonus up to £20,000 (discretionary), based on company / individual performance. This role will involve working closely with the MD and Traders, managing the overall finance function of the business as the sole person in charge; taking ownership of all accounting duties from credit control to financial reporting, to managing banking relationships, offering key insight to the MD in shaping the future of the business from a commercial perspective. In time, the successful individual will recruit, train and manage a full finance team. As highlighted, this is a new business in a small workforce and all that entails in terms of being a hands-on Financial Controller with peaks & troughs in tandem - but with an experienced, well-funded MD at the helm and market relationships already in tow, the rewards, both financially and from a career perspective, are considerable


Key finance responsibilities include;

  • Production of monthly financial / statutory & management accounts - and full Year End accounts
  • Leasing with accountants for yearly financials
  • Cash flow management
  • Monthly payment runs
  • Physical stock reporting and reconciliations
  • Credit risk forecasting
  • Supporting banking relationships including extending leasing agreements & onboarding new finance banks - and opening LC's
  • Yearly budgets (with supporting financial modelling) & written commentary
  • External & internal Power Point presentations
  • Leasing with tax specialists on group structure
  • General book-keeping, VAT, invoicing & expenses & payroll


Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA, ICAEW / ICAS or ACCA) with an audit background (Top 20 accountancy firm) and 3-5 years post-qualification experience, ideally within a commodities trading business, with Steel a significant advantage - though ambitious, audit-trained Finance Managers in industry with a demonstrable interest in commodities will also be considered
  • Experience of dealing with all aspects of financial / management accounting, including statutory accounting (UK GAAP), financial reporting, taxation strategy
  • Willingness to work onsite 5 days a week as per all staff, and build relationships both internally and externally - and travel 2-3 times per year in Europe for building business pipeline
  • Have a 'hands-on', 'roll your sleeves up' approach to a new business taking its first Finance Manager, including taking ownership of all junior as well as expected finance responsibilities
  • Reside in or near London, to facilitate working onsite 5 days per week, with hours 8.30am - 5.30pm
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills befitting a Financial Controller in a growing business, with gravitas, ambition - and the soft skills to build and leverage relationships internally and externally
