Role: System Safety EngineerPositions: 2 roles – one in Defence / one in Civil Aviation – 4 positions in totalLocation: Bristol or Yeovil – both hybrid, days onsite depend on roleRole Type: 12 months – initiallySalary: Up to £70 an hour, depending on experienceOur globally renowned aerospace client is seeking an experienced System Safety Engineer to join its specialist Safety Engineering teams supporting a range of UK civil and defence aerospace programmes. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of safety case artefacts for Boeing products and services within the UK defence or UK Civil Aviation domain, ensuring that systems meet the highest safety and certification standards throughout their lifecycle.Role 1 - Civil Aviation – Systems Safety Engineer:Key Responsibilities:Ensure system and aircraft-level safety requirements meet development assurance objectives in line with ARP4754A, DO-178B/C, and DO-254.Lead or contribute to the development and review of safety analyses, including Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Fault Tree Analyses (FTA), Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEA), and Common Mode Analyses (CMA).Support verification and validation activities that demonstrate compliance with system safety and certification objectives.Collaborate effectively with cross-functional engineering teams and international stakeholders to maintain safety across the full lifecycle of aircraft systems.Essential Requirements:Degree (BEng/MEng or equivalent) in Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline.10+ years’ experience in aerospace engineering, with 6+ years specialising in system safety engineering.Comprehensive understanding of ARP4761 safety assessment methodologies and the ARP4754 development process.Proficiency in Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) tools such as Reliability Workbench (RWB) or CAFTA.Desirable Skills and Experience:Formal training or academic qualifications in System Safety Engineering.Experience producing safety analyses for ATA 27 – Flight Controls or other flight-critical systems.Roles 2 - Defence – Systems Safety EngineerKey Responsibilities:Apply recognised system safety methodologies and tools to define and manage safety requirements in line with defence and aerospace regulations.Conduct system safety and hazard analyses, ensuring compliance with relevant standards such as Def Stan 00-056 and MIL-STD-882E.Develop structured safety arguments and documentation, including Safety Cases and Service Assurance Cases, using frameworks such as Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) or Claims, Argument and Evidence (CAE).Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams, project leads, and external stakeholders to integrate safety principles across all phases of the product and service lifecycle.Essential Requirements:Degree (BEng/MEng or equivalent) in Aerospace, Systems, or Safety Engineering.10+ years’ experience in aerospace engineering, including 6+ years in a system safety or related role.Strong background in safety-critical and regulated industries (e.g. aerospace, defence, automotive, rail).Proven knowledge of system safety processes such as Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), System Safety Assessment (SSA), and Common Cause Analysis (CCA).Skilled in safety analysis techniques including Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Bowtie Analysis.Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly.Desirable Skills and Experience:Formal qualifications or training in System Safety Engineering.Experience developing Service Assurance Cases for defence programmes.
