Principal Engineer - Platforms


Salary: £80-90k base

Location: Bristol (3 days a week on-site)

Role Overview: The Principal Engineer will lead the platforms engineering team, presenting a unique opportunity to undertake meaningful work within a dynamic and demanding environment. This role is part of the founding team of the platforms and product division. The ideal candidate will be motivated, collaborative, and passionate about making a substantial impact.


Responsibilities:

  • Architectural Vision and Best Practices: Define and establish system architectures, setting the benchmark for engineering excellence.
  • Strategic Technical Leadership: Develop and drive the strategic roadmap for Platforms.
  • Hands-On Technical Expertise: Create robust, scalable, and distributed systems, focusing on cloud infrastructure and Android-based solutions.
  • Design Authority: Lead design efforts to ensure privacy, security, compliance, high availability, performance, and resilience across all services and infrastructure (cloud environments, applications, security, and service desks).
  • Engineering Alignment: Represent the team in top-level engineering decisions, aligning projects with broader organisational objectives.
  • Collaborative Product and Service Development: Collaborate closely with customer-facing teams to deliver exceptional product and service experiences.
  • Elevating Engineering Standards: Initiate and lead engineering efforts to enhance standards, inspire the team, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Industry Awareness and Adaptation: Stay informed on industry trends, particularly in cloud and edge technologies, to keep solutions at the forefront.
  • Mentorship and Team Growth: Mentor and guide team members, promoting their professional development and career progression.


Key Skills, Experience, and Behaviours:

  • Extensive Technical Experience: Extensive experience in designing and implementing complex distributed systems, with significant contributions to large-scale projects as an architect or key individual contributor.
  • Deep Technical Expertise: Proficiency in building on private, hybrid, and public cloud environments, with skills in IaC languages (e.g., Terraform), containerisation (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), and familiarity with Android development (AOSP, custom ROMs, and drivers) including Kotlin, Java, C, and C++.
  • Holistic Service Implementation and Delivery: Proven track record in implementing secure service and support solutions, integrating multiple platforms from conception to deployment and maintenance.
  • Assurance and Accreditation Experience: Solid background in cybersecurity practices, accreditation processes, and continuous security assurance.
  • Decision-Making Leadership: Experience in leading the evaluation and selection of software and infrastructure solutions, ensuring optimal technical decisions.
  • Strategic Roadmap Development: Expertise in developing or contributing to multi-year engineering plans that align with product strategies and business objectives.


Highly Desirable Experience:

  • Experience in regulated sectors, delivering complex networked systems, such as defence, national security, telecommunications, financial services, or automotive industries.
