Senior Electronics Engineer
Glasgow - Hybrid Working
Thales Optronics designs a range of state-of-the-art solutions for some of the most technically advanced defence and security platforms in the world, and we are seeking talented engineers who can apply their knowledge and skills in an electronics role.
We have over 100 years' experience in design and manufacture of state-of-the-art Periscopes and Optronics and have led Optronics innovation on a global scale, by combining world-leading expertise from across the Thales group.
Due to continuing growth in our development activities associated with our Optronics Product Lines, we are recruiting for a Senior Electronics Engineer. This will be a key role within several of our programmes including Naval developments. We are ideally looking for the successful individual to have a firm understanding of engineering development within a regulated environment.
Overview
This role covers all aspects of the product lifecycle, from requirements through specification, concept studies, design and development, integration, validation and qualification. This is a great opportunity for an experienced electronics engineer to build technical skills, widen their systems understanding and develop their career.
Key responsibilities of the role
- Undertake design of complex electronic circuit assemblies or architectures, from concept through to system integration & qualification
- Lead discussions with a multi-disciplinary team (systems, mechanical, software, safety, etc) to develop an optimum solution
- Work collaboratively with the project team to ensure products meet all their requirements and comply with regulatory safety and environmental standards
- Contribute to the development of the wider electronics team, including mentoring junior members of staff, overseeing the implementation of improvements and reviewing the work of peers
- Generate electronics specifications, architectures, and development or verification plan
- Support the bid process through generation of estimates and consultancy on electronic solution
- Present robust engineering solutions at design reviews
- Monitor progress of work against cost, schedule and performance
Experience and skill we are ideally looking for
We are looking for a forward thinking individual with the following skills and experience:
- Experience of electronic design throughout the design lifecycle
- Previous use of schematic capture packages (Cadence, Mentor Graphics or similar)
- Development of electronic products in a formal/regulated environment, we do not require individuals to have experience of the Aerospace/Defence sectors.
- Experience testing at circuit board and system level (eg. board bring-up and debug, EMC testing)
- Preparation of sub-system requirements/procurement specs
- General understanding of engineering process and design lifecycles
Security Clearance Statement
This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant will undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance. Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance.
To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years' residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.

The Work Environment
At Thales, we believe in flexible SMART working and have the expectation this role will be delivered through a combination of remote and office based collaborative working. When working in the office, you will be based at the largest Thales site in the UK, featuring access to a wide variety of resources including manufacturing, environmental and electromagnetic test facilities and specialised laboratories.
