Lab & Workshop Manager


As the Lab & Workshop Manager at Crux, you will be responsible for overseeing our laboratory and workshop facilities, ensuring all equipment is calibrated and well-maintained. You will provide training to staff on equipment use, develop safety procedures, and support the engineering team with test setups and prototyping. This role involves maintaining a safe and organized workspace, managing inventory, and working closely with the operations team to coordinate equipment installations.


A core responsibility is to ensure all teams using the lab and workshop follow Crux’s procedures, maintaining the highest standards of health and safety at all times.

Additionally, you will collaborate with the Head of Operations to define future growth strategies, ensuring our facilities remain best-in-class and aligned with increasing client demand. Furthermore, you will continuously identify and present lab and equipment improvements to enhance operational efficiency and meet evolving client needs.


Principal Responsibilities


Facility Management:

Oversee Crux’s lab and workshop facilities, manage all equipment, and ensure all are calibrated and in good working order.

Arrange equipment calibration, as well as create and maintain training documents and a training matrix for all staff.

Manage equipment inventory, including consumables stock levels.


Training & Safety:

Conduct safety and induction training for new starters and provide ongoing upskilling for existing staff.

Perform and review risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and maintain MSDS information.

Ensure the highest standards of health and safety are met in the lab and workshop areas, enforcing safety policies and compliance with regulations. Ensure all teams using the space are safe and adhere to Crux's working procedures at all times.

Provide company-wide updates on upcoming engineering testing and associated risks.


Collaboration & Coordination:

Collaborate with the project management team to manage the scheduling of lab access and resources.

Maintain the required archive of client samples and project items.


Organization & Tidiness:

Maintain a high level of organization and tidiness in the lab and workshop spaces, ensuring that equipment is easily accessible and usable by all teams.

Encourage all teams using the facilities to uphold these standards, fostering a culture of respect and responsibility for shared resources.


Continuous Improvement:

Identify and present improvements for lab and equipment, ensuring facilities meet operational needs and support the growth of client projects.

Work with the Head of Operations to define future strategies for lab and workshop growth, ensuring that facilities meet best-in-class standards for our clients and are equipped to handle increasing demand from client projects.


What We’re Looking For…


Essential:

  • Proven experience in lab and workshop management.
  • Strong understanding of equipment calibration and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to create training documentation and deliver safety training.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health and safety standards, with experience in risk assessments, COSHH regulations, and enforcing procedural compliance.
  • Strong organizational and archival management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to collaborate effectively with engineering teams.

Desirable:

  • Experience in developing test protocols and setups.
  • Familiarity with purchasing and liaising with equipment suppliers.
