Electro-Mechanical Hardware Engineer

Cheadle (SK3 0XB) - Hybrid

Thales Underwater Systems cover a broad portfolio of engineering challenges, working at the forefront of the exciting area of remotely operated unmanned vehicles for maritime/naval operations, the introduction into service of new sonar capabilities to surface and submarine platforms in the UK and around the world, and the support for all Thales in-service sonar systems.

We're recruiting for an Electro-Mechanical Engineer to be instrumental in the Requirement Management, Integration and Qualification of products for complex system development. Specifically, this role will focus on the Integration of COTS products into Thales systems operating in safety critical environments.

Primary Purpose of the Role:

Undertake engineering tasks associated with the specification, design, prototyping, development, test and integration of interconnected products and bespoke sub-assemblies. Typical products will include high speed processing, storage, networking, security, data comms, LV power supply, switching and distribution.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

The role includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following activities:
  • Delivery of hardware components and requirements through design, development and test activities.
  • Implement the hardware architecture in physical and electrical form, fit and function.
  • Support Manufacturing and Procurement during the build phase, i.e. respond to Problem Reports and implement Engineering Change Requests.
  • Define the Design Proving / Hardware Test Specifications and use these during qualification.
  • Define the EMC and Environmental Test Specifications and use these during qualification.
  • Design and develop any special test equipment to facilitate the above.
  • Attend / manage qualification testing off-site where required (EMC and Environmental).
  • Demonstrate compliance to the requirements set using IADT techniques including the provision of V&V evidence for capturing in Requirements Management tools (e.g. DOORS)

Skills and experience required

As a minimum, we require relevant qualifications related to General Electronic and Electrical Engineering, to Degree level or equivalent. With demonstrable experience of delivering Electronic/Hardware solutions in Safety Critical/Regulated environments, including a firm understanding of the Engineering Development Lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with COTS products and integration of COTS and bespoke equipment sub-assemblies
  • Experience of selecting and designing products and materials compliant with RoHS and REACH Directives.
  • Experience of producing electrical designs and certifying designs to comply with the LV Directive.
  • Working with mechanical engineers to realise electrical designs in 3D mechanical space.
  • An understanding of cable screening methods and military style cable construction methodologies.
  • Designing to meet EMC and environmental standards / requirements.
  • Understanding/experience of CE Marking
