Our story

We may not know much about engineering, but we do know engineers. We’ve been supporting IET members and their families since 1890.

“Every day as head of fundraising and communications at Foothold presents unique opportunities. One moment, you might find yourself engaging with potential funders or corporate partners, crafting compelling pitches and proposals; the next, you could be facilitating planning sessions with the team or presenting performance reports to our trustees.

The common thread weaving through this role is the collaborative effort to advance Foothold’s vision to ensure no engineer faces life’s challenges alone.

Since Foothold embarked on proactively fundraising in 2020, we’ve seen the introduction of several new income streams and initiatives. These are ripe for further development, and a key aspect of this role will be building upon the existing foundations and elevating them to the next level.

About the role

Primary Purpose:

Lead on strategic fundraising, marketing, brand and communications plans for Foothold.

Lead, manage and develop the fundraising & communications team.

Work as a member of the senior management team collaborating with colleagues to

support the development and delivery of the Foothold strategic plan.


Key Tasks to include:

Strategy & management

  • Develop, implement, and monitor strategies and plans for fundraising, communications, brand, and marketing to achieve the organisational plan, and exceed targets and other KPls.
  • Lead and manage the fundraising & communications team monitoring work plans, providing regular supervision, conducting annual appraisals and personal development plans.
  • Work as an effective member of the Senior Management Team, deputising for the Chief Executive Officer as required.


Fundraising

  • Provide sustainable income across multiple streams (individual giving, legacies, corporate, trusts and foundations, trading, community, events etc) to ensure a wide mix is achieved in sources to meet agreed targets.
  • Research, identify and prioritise opportunities for fundraising as part of a review of the Fundraising Strategy.
  • Oversee the development of compelling cases for support and funding pitches in conjunction with our contracted bid writer and SMT.
  • Develop a fundraising culture among staff and volunteers so all stakeholders are aware of the importance of income generation in the future sustainability of the charity.
  • Lead on the development of the major donor programme, personally account managing a portfolio of major supporters to maximise relationships and income.
  • Oversee the donor development programme including donor impact reporting, ensuring supporters receive high quality feedback on the impact of their support.


Communications & marketing:

  • Create, implement and measure comprehensive programmes to enhance Foothold’s image and reputation within the engineering and benevolent fund sectors. Ensure plans are developed in accordance with these programmes and activity is monitored and evaluated.
  • Ensure the development and implementation of engaging digital wellbeing content that meets the needs of the Foothold community to meet agreed targets and KPls.
