GLOBAL CORPORATE SOLUTIONS

Reporting to the Managing Director and World Bank Chief Administrative Officer, Global Corporate Solutions (GCS) brings together the functions of Corporate Security, Corporate Real Estate, and Corporate Services.

ABOUT THE UNIT

The Corporate Services (GCSCS) unit within GCS provides services to the WBG in the areas of Travel and Visa services; Translation and Interpretation; Printing & Multimedia Services; Interactive Media Services; Graphic Design; Editorial Production & Publications; Food and Conference Services; Mail & Shipping; Staff Services, including Fitness Center, Childcare, and Commuter Services; and the Art Program. The unit also provides administrative oversight to the WBG Family Network and the 1818 Society and is responsible for setting the policy framework and service standards, and for delivering services through a combination of staff and vendors at WBG headquarters (HQ) in Washington, DC and in Country Offices. GCSCS has about 130 staff and over 600 contractors.

To achieve its purpose, GCSCS is structured into two main divisions: (I) Travel and Client Services (GCSTC), and (II) Business Services (GCSBA). GCSCS also has the GCS Service Desk and Processing and Analytics Unit support team in Chennai.

The GCS Art Program is part of GCSTC and is responsible for managing the World Bank's permanent collection of over 6,000 artworks. The Art Program curates exhibitions (physical and virtual) highlighting various aspects of development and the Bank's mission. Art exhibitions feature mostly contemporary, emerging visual artists from developing countries. Performing arts and creative industries, such as music, dance, theater, poetry, cinema, fashion, and design are occasionally included, and this may expand, together with AI and data visualization. The Art Program rotates artworks in public spaces around the Bank's headquarters buildings and works closely with the Corporate Real Estate team on headquarters and Country Office building and office renovation projects, advising select Bank Country Offices on art acquisitions. The Art Program runs art educational and outreach programs, including art workshops, tours, and lectures for Bank staff and others. The Art Program runs an annual, global Children's Art Prize Contest in collaboration with the World Bank Family Network, sponsored by the World Bank President. The Art Program coordinates closely with IFC colleagues for a collaborative approach across the World Bank Group.

The Art Assistant reports to the Art Program Coordinator (Registrar) and the Art Curator and works under their direction. The Assistant also works closely with other Art Program staff and staff across GCS and the wider World Bank Group. The Assistant acts as a backup for the Registrar. Other duties and accountabilities are outlined below.

DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
The Art Assistant is responsible for the safe and proper handling, transportation, installation, and deinstallation of artwork and artifacts within a museum setting, ensuring the preservation of collection items by following established procedures for packing, lifting, and displaying pieces, collaborating with the Curator, Registrar, and other colleagues within the Art Program to execute exhibitions and care for the World Bank permanent collection. In addition, the Registrar's Assistant will cooperate in upkeeping the collection management database, creating textual material for display, and improving and expanding the collection's visibility and accessibility.

Handling and Packing:
• Carefully packing and unpacking artworks for storage, transport, and exhibitions using appropriate materials and techniques to prevent damage.

Installation and Deinstallation:
• Installing and removing artworks from exhibition spaces, including hanging paintings, mounting sculptures, and setting up display fixtures according to exhibition design plans.

Transportation:
• Assisting with the loading and unloading of artwork onto vehicles, ensuring proper securing and protection during transport.

Condition Reporting:
• Documenting the condition of artworks before, during, and after handling, noting any damage or concerns.

Storage Management:
• Maintaining proper storage conditions for artwork in museum storage facilities.

Inventory Control:
• Accurately tracking and documenting the location and condition of museum collection items

Safety Procedures:
• Adhering to all museum safety protocols related to artwork handling, including lifting techniques and proper use of protective gear.

Art Texts and Labels:
• Producing and installing short and long-form labels for artworks on display. Produces texts for exhibitions and publications.
Art Collection Database/Records Upkeep:
• Performing upkeep of the Art Program's collection database, TMS/Gallery Systems/emuseum.
• Performing photographic record keeping of individual artworks and of installations, at museum professional level.

Selection Criteria

• High School Diploma, or preferably a Bachelor's Degree in studio art, museum studies, or related art field, with a minimum of two years of art handling experience in a museum, gallery, artist studio, private or corporate collection, or similar environment.
• Familiarity with standard museum practices, terminology, and art history.
• Understanding of different art materials, framing techniques, and installation methods.
• Awareness and understanding of art mounts, supports, and structures.
• Proficiency with hand and power tools.
• Working knowledge of outdoor and indoor artistic mediums (stone, iron, steel, wood, canvas, etc.).
• Ability to carry out work required in lifting and transporting artworks; must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, and up to 100 with assistance.
• Collaborating effectively with other Art Program staff, including curators, registrars, and artwork and exhibition researchers.
• Experience with any or all of the following is preferred/a plus: TMS Gallery Systems and emuseum software; lift certification; rigging; photographing artworks; framing art.
