Primary Purpose of the Role:

The Project Design Authority will be responsible for the SSN-AUKUS Main Sonar System (2076) Solution Compliance. The PDA will act as the principle technical authority and providing technical leadership and direction of the Main Sonar system architecture of the SSN-AUKUS platform, this will be through the entire bid and project delivery lifecycle. The PDA will perform a principle duty as lead technical interface with the Customer's (BAE & MOD) for all SSN-AUKUS projects and related research (Customer Funded R&D and SFRD).This role will work alongside the SSN-AUKUS Bid Manager and Programme Manager for Thales UWS.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

The list below is not exhaustive, they are given as a guide for the expected duties of the role.
  • Apply technical leadership and strategic direction to ensure the overall successful delivery of the SSN-AUKUS Main Sonar Portfolio, including (but not limited too) all related sub-systems within, technology and research work streams and customer funded projects.
  • Lead and support all related sub-system control accounts and appointed PDA's, actively participate in the creation and evolution of the technical team, ensuring the successful delivery of the SSN-AUKUS Main Sonar portfolio.
  • Directly line Manage Sub-System PDA's, working with the Technical Director to appoint roles.
  • Analyses Customer needs/requirements and asses the Solution architecture and defined technical direction.
  • Ensures Solution compliance against the Customer needs, Product Policy, MTBoF Strategy & applicable legislation, rules & regulations.
  • Review and own the technical risks and opportunities and the related mitigation plans throughout the bid or project.
  • Ensures justified most appropriate trade-offs between Customer requirements & Product Policy consistent with schedule, costs, MTB strategy & risks/ opportunities.
  • Checks the production and the maintenance/service aspects of the Solution with the Production Process/Technology Manager (PPTM) and the Service Engineering Manager (Now EDM).
  • Authority for the technical specification and source selection of subsystems/products to be outsourced, by adhering to Make-Team-Buy or footprint policy, export restrictions/certification and offset requirements.
  • Assures the completeness, consistency, coherence, traceability and justification of the project Engineering Management and supporting plans
  • Responsible for ensuring, with the support of Specialty Engineering experts & Safety/HSE stakeholders, that the Solution design takes into account contract requirements and applicable legislation, rules & regulations, including solution and product safety & security and Environmental/HSE requirements & standards, and that related certification activities are performed adequately and correctly.
  • Approves the Design & Justification File (D&JF) prepared by the Solution Architect (ARC).
  • Approves the completion of integration, verification, validation and qualification results.
  • Performs the Complexity Profiler analysis with the Solution Architect (ARC) & SEM. Take into account the resulting actions during the bid or project.
  • Present Certificate(s) of Design as appropriate, for approval and assure supporting evidence.
  • Alerts first the DA then upward to Technical Director, supporting them within CBU/Domain, Country, BL or GBU Technical Directorate as needed.
  • Leads the main bid/project Engineering Reviews and approves the main Engineering deliverables at each project decision milestone.
  • Organises when appropriate technical meetings and peer reviews together with the EDM (Engineering Delivery Manager) and other technical stakeholders and experts, in order to perform the Solution technical assessment and validation.
  • Contribute to business and product development strategy as required.
  • Sound understanding of the development lifecycle and lifecycle products for complex solutions.
  • Interfacing with the client, to define the solution.
  • Keep abreast of technical developments both within and outside of the company.

  • Proficient presentation skills to a varied audience and multiple levels of seniority, internally and externally.
  • Ability to effectively manage relationships across the business and wider enterprise, achieving outcomes beneficial to both own team and the broader business.
  • Demonstrated delivery experience in complex, multidisciplinary, multi-site programmes within the UK submarine sector. Holding a strong record of on-budget, on-time delivery, whilst maximising margin and delivering to the customer's requirement and exceeding customer expectation.
  • Highly effective personal organisation and an ability to remain composed and focused under pressure.
  • The ability to provide strategic overview and direction in support of the AUKUS Capture and bid strategy.
  • A strong demonstrated understanding of the Thales DDQS and project lifecycle (or equivalent).
  • The acumen to develop the next generation, imparting skills and knowledge through on the job training.

Experience:
  • Extensive and thorough understanding of acoustics (physics, modelling, testing, data analysis etc.) of both Passive and Active sonar. Competence as an acoustics practitioner in the sonar domain is critical to the role.
  • The Candidate will ideally have successfully technically led the delivery of an end-to-end sonar solution, from initial requirement definition to in-service deployment
  • Extensive experience in the submarine integrated sonar domain.
  • Extant customer relationships & network preferable.
  • Significant leadership experience in large, complex, multi-entity bids
  • Influencing in the wider submarine enterprise with stakeholders both internal and customers.
  • Acknowledged expert in one or more of the technological disciplines relevant to the company, e.g. Sonar Systems, Processing, Outboard Hardware etc, and/or in one or more of understanding of business case generation, resource planning, and budgetary control. The developmental lifecycle disciplines, e.g. Requirements Capture, Modelling & Analysis, System Design, Product Development, and IV&V.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable of whole systems engineering lifecycles for large complex multi subsystem systems.
