St Aloysius' College is unique. Scotland's only Jesuit school is situated at the very heart of the city of Glasgow, with a large campus right next to the Glasgow School of Art and near to the Royal Conservatoire, few schools feel quite so much part of the city. Our iconic green blazer is as much a part of the city as the Clyde and Central Station The College has a proud tradition of academic excellence with results placing us amongst the top performing schools in the country. There is good demand for places at the key entry points to the schools. The College occupies a range of buildings from the imposing and listed 1859 Hanson Building, through the award winning Clavius Science Building to the £8 million sports complex at the very heart of our site.

The College is proudly a Jesuit and Catholic school but its community is diverse.

THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND THEOLOGY DEPARTMENT

The Religious Education and Theology Department oversees a core programme for all pupils in the school from P1 through to S6 which is inspired by 'This is Our Faith' and the College's Jesuit Ethos, which, in turn, is informed by over four centuries of Ignatian Pedagogy. In keeping with the Characteristics of Jesuit Education, the Department seeks to assist in the complete formation of each individual by promoting sound intellectual formation, probing the meaning of human existence and creating a sense of wonder and mystery in learning about God's creation. The Department works closely with the Christian Formation Team to provide pupils with both an intellectual and spiritual foundation in the Catholic Faith.

The Department includes specialist teachers, along with the class teachers in the junior school and a number of generalist teachers who provide support in the senior school. All pupils in the College study National 5 Religious Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS) in S3 and S4. Higher and Advanced Higher RMPS are offered in S5 and S6. The generalist courses based on 'This Is Our Faith' provide a grounding in areas like scripture and the sacraments, along with the Scottish Catholic Caritas Award in S6.

The Religious Education Department urges students to explore their intellectual, personal, social and spiritual potential in the adventure of truly becoming men and women for others.

The Role

This is an exciting and challenging role for a Head of Department to lead and manage their team to ensure that a programme of core Religious Education for P1-S6 is provided that will inspire and motivate pupils to enable them to reach their full potential.

The Person

You will be passionate about motivating young people to learn, but equally important is the ability to encourage and foster spiritual growth in the lives of all pupils. The successful candidate will therefore work closely with the Chaplaincy in the delivery of liturgy and our retreat programme

You should nominate two referees to support your application (please note referees will be asked to assess you against the person specification above rather than being generic in nature). One referee must be your parish priest or another priest who can comment on your faith commitment. Please note that references will only be taken up for the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will be placed on the St Aloysius' College pay scales and will have the opportunity to join highly competitive defined contribution pension scheme.

St Aloysius' College places safeguarding of its pupils as its highest priority and as such the successful applicant will be subject to appropriate qualification checks and advanced PVG clearance. Appropriate safeguarding and safer recruitment questions will form part of the selection process.

To comply with the regulations under The Education (Scotland) Act 2016, all teachers who commence employment at any Scottish Independent School on or after 1 October 2017 must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), either Provisional, Provisional (Conditional) or Full.
