Benefits, Taxation and Income Officer

  • Location: Barnsley- working from home available 
  • Job Type: Full-time, 37 hours Monday-Friday
  • Pay: £12.59 PAYE/ £15.41 Umbrella 

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Benefits, Taxation and Income Officer to join my clients dedicated council tax billing team. The role involves inputting changes of addresses and circumstances, as well as awarding relevant discounts and exemptions. You will be part of a team that ensures the effective delivery of services including Benefits, Council Tax, Non-Domestic Rates, and Free School Meals, and plays a key role in the recovery of monies owed to the council.

Day to Day of the role:
  • Carry out assessments for free school meals, housing benefits, and council tax support, including areas of subsidy loss and discretion.
  • Administer a comprehensive Non-Domestic Rates Service and Council Tax Service, ensuring correct billing through the award of discounts, exemptions, and reliefs.
  • Contribute to the recovery and enforcement of Council debt, including council tax, non-domestic rates, and overpaid housing benefit.
  • Undertake telephone duties, providing information and guidance across various service areas of the council.
  • Respond to, investigate, and resolve complex queries, dealing with complaints and difficult customers, ensuring a customer-focused service.
  • Maintain accurate records using specialist systems, ensuring information confidentiality.
  • Assist in the preparation of data and statistical returns to support compliance management.
  • Administer documentation and correspondence, contributing to performance linked to corporate objectives.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, maintaining effective communication links.
  • Suggest improvements for service efficiency and contribute to business re-engineering efforts.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Experience in a Financial Services environment.
  • Ability to work to and meet strict deadlines.
  • Previous local government experience using authority-based systems.
  • Experience in customer services.
  • Competency in numeracy and literacy.
  • Good working knowledge of computer-based systems, including Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of local government financial procedures and statutory regulations.
  • Understanding of the Data Protection Act and the importance of confidentiality.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle and process complex information with accuracy.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
