Key responsibilities

1. Learning, Teaching & Student Support Leadership  

  1. Lead the development of innovative design, development and delivery of high-quality programmes of study at various levels through oversight, management and leadership of Programme Leaders.  
  2. Ensure that there is a culture of continuous enhancement, innovation and efficiency of the academic practice and value for money within the provision in CICM (College of Integrated Chinese Medicine).  
  3. Ensure that academic staff keep abreast of latest developments in learning and teaching within Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture and remain aware of external best practice benchmarks.  
  4. Keep abreast of relevant pedagogies and research methodologies to ensure best practice within CICM through strong communication and delivery of staff development. 
  5. Oversee the design and development of curricula and ensure that course design and delivery comply with the College’s and OfS (Office for Students) quality standards and regulations.  
  6. Oversee the effective setting and marking of assessment coursework and examinations including BAAB accredited courses.  
  7. Develop and lead an impactful induction programme for new students. 
  8. Develop and lead student involvement in curriculum design and the impact of the student voice/feedback within CICM, including organising and responding to Boards of Study.  
  9. Undertake administrative and managerial duties required in the day-to-day running of CICM in compliance with OfS registration  
  10. Demonstrate an approachable, non-discriminatory and inclusive attitude towards staff and students. Value and promote diversity and equality in learning and teaching.  
  11. Ensure that all relevant policies and processes are understood and adhered to by staff and students.  

2. Leadership  

  1. Lead, develop and motivate academic staff and coordinators within CICM to ensure excellence in the delivery of programmes. 
  2. Lead processes for recruitment, performance and development review, and workload management of CICM academic staff.  
  3. Leadership of strategy to achieve enhanced outcomes in academic provision.  
  4. Demonstrate strong, clear, communication within CICM, consulting students and stakeholders on academic strategy development.  
  5. Lead development of academic standards within CICM and ensure that the College complies with academic quality and OfS requirements.  
  6. Build internal and external contacts and play a key role in internal networks and relevant external networks within the field of Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture.  
  7. Contribute to the fields of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture through such activities as delivering workshops, writing and keeping abreast of current developments.  
  8. Oversight of budgeting, forecasting and management of financial and other resources in relation to learning, teaching and student outcomes  

3. Contribution to Faculty and CICM  

  1. Line-management of Programme Leaders, including their recruitment, probation, mentoring, performance review and staff development.  
  2. Understanding and management of Faculty income and expenditure, with responsibility for cost effective delivery of learning, teaching and student experience  
  3. Contribute to CICM-level strategic planning processes as required.  
  4. Play a key role in CICM working groups or committees, as required, including Executive and Management Committees.  
  5. Undertake appropriate administrative or organisational duties within the College, where appropriate. 
  6. Advise and provide support to CICM academic staff and less experienced colleagues, including overseeing of teaching and annual Performance Appraisal processes.  
  7. Conduct risk assessments and take responsibility for the health and safety of others.  

4. Role-specific duties  

  1. The Academic Director will be responsible for the learning, teaching and student outcomes across programmes within CICM through the leadership and management of Programme Leaders.  
  2. The post holder will work with the Executive Committee to ensure the successful development and implementation of academic strategy  
  3. On a daily basis, the AD will be responsible for the leadership and management of academic staff and the enhancement of student experience, including open events, induction, assessment, progression and award.  
  4. The post holder will maintain oversight of academic standards and in-year progression in CICM. They will provide leadership to ensure standards and timeliness in student advice and guidance, liaison with external examiners, organisation of timetables, room bookings and programme handbooks.  
  5. The Academic Director will maintain oversight of CICM learning and teaching operations and leadership of longer-term academic development. 

5. Other Duties  

  1. Compliance with all College policies and guidelines (i.e. Health & Safely, Data Protection, Equality & Diversity.), OfS policies and regulations, and those relating to professional and regulating bodies.  
  2. Attendance at EC/MC meetings; Council meetings, Progression Board meetings; University accreditation meetings; Validation and Exam Board meetings 
  3.  Any other duties that may be required by CICM 

Criteria 

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree, or equivalent relevant professional experience - Essential 
  • PGCert HE (Higher Education) (or willingness to complete and obtain SFHEA within 2 years of appointment) - Essential   
  • Previous experience of working within senior academic management level (5 years' experience minimum) - Essential 

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Significant experience of management and leadership in an academic environment, delivering excellent outcomes and driving high service performance  - Essential 
  • Experience in policy development, programme evaluation and system or process improvement  - Essential 
  • An understanding or appreciation of acupuncture as a profession  - Desirable 
  • Expert in teaching, learning and / or research methodologies with an ability to develop new knowledge, innovation and understanding of their field. - Desirable 
  • Experience of understanding/achieving continuous improvements to respond to requirements to deliver excellence in learning and teaching. - Essential

Commencement date: 1 November 2024 (or earlier)  

Duration of contract: Permanent  

Salary: £66,000 (FTE) dependant on experience  

Probation period: 6 months.

Place of work: on site in our Reading office but flexible working arrangements will be considered .

Hours: the post is part-time and to include one Saturday/month 22.5-hour week. 3 days/week.

Holidays: 36 days including bank holidays (pro rata).
