The Vacancy
We have an exciting opportunity to join the Nordics & Northern Europe Team as a Claims Executive, predominately dealing with P&I work with the option of also doing FD&D work where qualified. In this role, you'll be responsible for handling many different claims, from notification to completion. Overtime, and with support, we encourage our claims team to foster direct relationships with our membership, to handle claims with independence, liaising closely with members and management to achieve the best possible outcome and provide the best quality claims service in the market. Commerciality and speed of response are key to this role.
What will you be doing?
Key responsibilities will include:
- Handling a high-volume and variety of claims, including complex and high-value matters, for owners and charterers in accordance with policies and procedures; ensuring claims are resolved in an efficient and cost-effective manner to the satisfaction of the Member.
- Maintaining a detailed understanding of, and as appropriate acting in accordance with company-wide, functional, and sectoral rules, policies, guidelines, and procedures.
- Managing relationships with Members and brokers, ensuring they receive the highest levels of service.
- Estimating P&I claims promptly and in accordance with the procedures.
- Settling third party P&I claims at the most economic figure possible, in accordance with the Rules and the Member's Terms of Entry.
- Appointing lawyers, surveyors, consultants and correspondents and to receive and evaluate critically advice received.
- Issuing security always within procedures, financial authority limits and subject to Members' approval.
- Ensure regular, accurate and timely reporting to the Head of P&I Claims in the relevant geographical sector on new P&I claims and developments on claims in line with procedural requirements and any triggers advised from time-to-time.
- Close collaboration with colleagues working within the FD&D and Underwriting functions in the Sector, as well as with Loss Prevention, including identifying risk trends and relationship-management issues.
- Working closely with the Head of P&I Claims and other colleagues, as required, to support any business development activities and networking with Members and customers (locally and overseas), mentoring, supervising and managing colleagues as required by the Head of P&I Claims.
- Take responsibility for sharing knowledge and skills with less experienced colleagues.
About you
Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience
- Degree (preferably in Law) or equivalent (e.g. Master Mariners Certificate) or relevant experience gained handling claims in a previous role at a P&I club or working for a ship owner or charterer.
- IT literate with a good working knowledge of MS Office.
- Good interpersonal skills always appropriate to cultural diversity and with the ability to communicate well both in English, verbally and in writing.
- Flexible with availability to be able to service needs of Members and geographical sector colleagues.
- The right to work within the UK.
Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience
- Previous shipping law or industry experience (minimum 3 years).
