Summer students will undertake a short (6-12) week research project within the NQCCs Superconducting Circuits team. In this project you will learn the theory of Superconducting Quantum Computing and (depending on experience) get hands on experience with Superconducting Quantum Computers in the lab.

You will perform simulations and/or experiments relating to superconducting qubits, analyse the resulting data and produce presentations/reports on the findings which will be presented to the internal NQCC Superconducting team.

You will also participate in group meetings with the Superconducting Circuits team and wider NQCC activities such as Journal Club - and Cake Club

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Learn about and understand the concepts underlying superconducting qubits.
  • Apply knowledge of superconducting qubits gained to perform experiments on superconducting devices.
  • Apply knowledge of superconducting qubits gained to create simulations of superconducting systems with standard industry software.
  • Developing monitoring systems for the lab environment
  • Take part in simple experimental runs with the NQCCs Superconducting Team, including taking and analysing data and writing lab reports on these experiments.
  • Take part in internal NQCC group activities such as group meetings and discussions surrounding your project.
  • Disseminate information learnt to internal teams through group meetings, internal discussions, and final presentations.
To apply for this placement, we are looking for the following:

Essential:
  • You are in full time education at university, and will be returning to university/your studies once the summer placement has concluded
  • Currently studying physics, theoretical physics, mathematical physics or physics related course.
  • You have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement.
  • Demonstrable interest in quantum computing or quantum technology.
  • Knowledge of programming languages and data analysis techniques - Ideally python.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to plan and work independently on scientific research projects
  • Good understanding of physics Knowledge/awareness relevant to Superconducting Circuits (e.g. quantum harmonic oscillators, two-level systems, quantum information)
  • Scientific programming for simulation, measurement or data analysis (ideally in python)
  • Experience Confident working in a lLab environment and operating experimental tools and electronics in particular with RF analysis equipment - VNA, Oscilloscope or Signal Analysers
  • Knowledge Experience with software and techniques for CAD design software, emachining or 3D printing or RF simulation software
