Cambridge, United Kingdom Centre for Global Equality Ltd Full time

The Centre for Global Equality is looking for a self-motivated, highly organised individual with excellent people skills to lead our finance and operations functions.

About CGE

The Centre for Global Equality (CGE) is a UK-based civil society organisation that evolves innovative solutions to challenges in sustainable development, particularly those relating to food, water, health, income generation, energy, climate and the environment. Through our inclusive innovation approach, CGE mobilises science and technology for the benefit of people across the world who live on less than $5 a day, without harming the environment or the interests of future generations. Bringing together collaborators from civil society, academia, government and business we enable the cocreation of innovative solutions with the people they are intended to benefit.

Through our global civil society network, we identify challenges faced by low-resource communities in developing and emerging economies. We match these challenges with the interests of academic researchers, and support proposal development along with the delivery of resulting research programmes. An example is CGE’s leadership of the Country Partnership function in the Climate Compatible Growth consortium research programme.

CGE also supports the implementation of research findings, which generally require significant R&D to ensure that the resulting innovations are context-appropriate and deliver the intended positive social and environmental impacts. Through our Inclusive Innovation Cultivator, a specialist sustainable development incubator, we support 30 environmental and social enterprise startups.

CGE has a global network of partners in low- and middle-income countries. Presently we work directly in the UK, Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia, Ghana, Lao PDR, Vietnam, India and Indonesia. Our Cultivator ventures also work in Argentina, Brazil, Cambodia, Cameroon, Colombia, Madagascar, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda.

CGE’s UK activities are run from our Inclusive Innovation Hub in central Cambridge, where the Cultivator is housed. Our contribution to research and teaching at the University of Cambridge is enabled through the Cambridge Centre for Inclusive Innovation based in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CEB). Other UK universities and research institutions we collaborate with include Imperial, UCL, Oxford, Loughborough, Strathclyde, NIAB and the British Antarctic Survey.

The role

This is a key role in CGE’s core team at an exciting time in our evolution as an organisation. We have grown fast over the past few years, and we seek an experienced finance and operations professional excited by the opportunity to enhance CGE’s systems and processes to ensure that we follow good practice in all spheres of our work. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Finance and Operations Manager will be at the operational and strategic heart of CGE. As a small but fast-growing organisation, daily activities will range from minor tasks to long-term strategic planning, and flexibility will be needed.

Overall, the Finance and Operations Manager will be responsible for managing CGE’s finances and overseeing the operational and administration systems required to deliver our programme activities effectively. As we work both in-person and virtually, management of both physical and digital organisational infrastructure is required.
