Principal Building Physics Consultant

Location: London (Hybrid - 3 days onsite with flexibility)


A design consultancy specialising in building services, sustainability, and energy is seeking a Principal Building Physics Consultant to join its energy team. The role focuses on leading operational energy modelling and advising clients on achieving net zero carbon performance in line with regulatory targets. The consultant will play a key role in projects from planning through to design, construction, and operational use, aiming to enhance building performance and reduce carbon emissions.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out comprehensive building performance analysis, including passive design and façade optimisation.
  • Develop operational energy reduction plans, adhering to methodologies such as CIBSE TM54 and NABERS Design for Performance.
  • Undertake Part L compliance modelling and Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) assessments.
  • Prepare technical reports, calculations, energy statements, and specifications to support sustainable building design.
  • Work closely with MEP engineers, architects, and sustainability consultants, leading project meetings and workshops.
  • Mentor and train junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
  • Manage individual workload, contribute to resource planning, and ensure the delivery of high-quality consultancy services.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience within a design consultancy, focusing on building physics and energy modelling.
  • Accredited Level 5 Non-Domestic Energy Assessor, ideally with experience in IES Virtual Environment (IES VE) software.
  • Demonstrable expertise with UK planning policy requirements, including the London Plan and other local energy policies.
  • Experience in leading design workshops and effectively communicating technical information to non-specialist stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying energy efficiency solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and as a key team member, demonstrating initiative in delivering project objectives.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK without restrictions.
