Montash is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Data Engineer / Applied Machine Learning Specialist to join our team. This role will support a large-scale Health and Wellbeing platform and is designed for a Senior Consultant with expertise in building data maturity foundations and delivering impactful data solutions. This is a greenfield project, offering a unique opportunity to build and shape the system from the ground up.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Building Data Maturity Foundations: Develop and implement strategies to advance our data maturity, establishing robust data pipelines and infrastructure.
  • Hands-On Contribution: Be willing and able to dive into critical moments and areas, providing hands-on technical leadership and support.
  • System Design and Engineering: Design and implement scalable backend systems, working across multiple tech stacks and platforms to deliver impactful solutions.
  • Cross-Functional Impact: Demonstrate a proven ability to influence and improve engineering culture and excellence beyond primary technical areas, driving advancements in our data ecosystem at a large scale.
  • Business Impact: Deliver significant business value through data- and machine learning-powered product capabilities, focusing on pragmatic solutions that provide tangible results.
  • Team Development: Mentor and upskill team members in data engineering and machine learning best practices, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.


Key Skills and Experience:

  • Backend Development: Strong background in backend development, particularly in designing and maintaining server-side components.
  • Data Engineering: Extensive experience with integrating and optimizing databases such as MongoDB, PostgreSQL, or similar. Proficiency in building data pipelines and handling large-scale data ecosystems.
  • Applied Machine Learning: Hands-on experience with applied machine learning techniques and frameworks. Ability to deploy and scale machine learning models in production environments.
  • System Design: Proven impact on system-level design across multiple tech stacks/platforms, including outside of primary area. Experience in multithreaded, object-oriented, and real-time programming.
  • Engineering Culture: Proven impact on engineering culture and excellence, including outside of primary area. Ability to pragmatically leverage simple approaches for hypothesis exploration and validation.
  • Business-Driven Approach: Proven ability to deliver business impact through data and machine learning initiatives. Focus on practical solutions that drive measurable results.
