Our client is a growing, innovative Challenger Bank with a strong appetite to lend supported by an existing geographic footprint, competitive product offering & growing lending book. As part of the next stage of their growth journey they are looking for a Senior Underwriter with BTL & Bridging experience to join their very successful Specialist Mortgages team.


Purpose of the Senior Underwriter – BTL/Bridging;


The Senior Underwriter – BTL/Bridging will underwrite BTL and Commercial investment applications in line with the company lending policy and manage applications through to completion of the loan. Reporting to the manager, the principal interfaces will be with all Underwriter Colleagues, Risk Management, Brokers and Lending Officer colleagues, with a lending mandate of £1.5m & supporting larger deals through credit committee.


This is a risk-based function and operates as the gatekeeper for the quality of lending decisions in Specialist Mortgages. The Underwriter should be a commercial minded risk advocate able to balance risk and reward, keeping the bank safe through good lending decisions


Key responsibilities of the Senior Underwriter – BTL/Bridging:


  • To have a pragmatic approach to underwriting mortgage applications within approved delegated authority mandate.
  • To understand and analyse key items such as credit searches, property portfolio, bank statements, financial accounts and security valuations in order to make informed lending decisions
  • Ensure low levels of arrears and losses whilst balancing the requirement to be a flexible and balanced lender in the specialist sector
  • To form a rationale to lend when outside of own individual mandate and ability to discuss with key stakeholders in group risk function
  • To ensure during the underwriting process the appropriate customer due diligence is completed or requested for satisfaction prior to completion, and AML risks are appropriately mitigated
  • To deliver high levels of accuracy and attention to detail in data and documentation you are responsible for.
  • To deal with all internal and external telephone and email enquiries efficiently and within company standards
  • To develop successful working relationships with our brokers, communicating decisions and requirements effectively
  • To manage a pipeline of cases prior to formal offer endeavouring to deliver on company defined service standards
  • To have a good understanding of all company policies, procedures and compliance guidelines, ensuring the principles are in your daily practises to protect the company from any associated risks.
  • To work effectively as a team with the various functions of the division to enable them to carry out their duties & operations



Skills & Experience of the Senior Underwriter – BTL/Bridging

Experienced underwriter in the residential buy to let, commercial/semi-commercial and short term lending sectors

Risk awareness with balanced judgement

Delivery of excellence in customer service, customer centric approach

Flexible approach to ensure delivery

Relationship management

Collaboration

Good communication skills

Adaptable to new products and markets
