Technical Project Manager Role

Role Overview

The technical project manager shall be responsible for managing UK deliverables in contracted RnD programs, and Science and Technology programs within the Cargo and Vehicle Inspection division of Rapiscan Systems. He/She should have the experience of managing new product development programs/projects across all functional disciplines, with demonstrable technical competence to understand the development of new technologies from conception to productization.


Responsibilities

  • Managing early (Technology Readiness Level) TRL deliverables required for the Internal RnD, and externally funded contractual RnD projects. Liaising with the technical authorities and other Engineering project managers to ensure alignment with the technical requirements, and customer deliverable documentation.
  • Ensuring that supporting documentation for development, project management, and customer dissemination is formally released in a manner that adheres to the company’s standard and processes.
  • Managing the interface with customers, during regular program updates; suppliers, for new hardware delivery requirements; and regulatory bodies, for certification, throughout the duration of the project.
  • Leading the new product development projects from the initial concept, through the development process, prototype build, verification & validation, and eventual product launch.
  • Creating and maintaining project schedules based on the project scope. Working with cross functional teams to establish an achievable project plan and schedule.
  • Facilitating regular project meetings to drive project progression. Managing the project critical path and prioritizing the work in the critical path to maintain key project milestones.
  • Monitoring and controlling project scope. Documenting project scope changes according to the relevant process, and understanding the impact on the project timescale, budget, and quality.
  • Managing risks and issues on the projects and applying the mitigations and resolutions. Escalating to the senior managers when the risks and issues are likely to threaten the project delivery.
  • Organising the key stage review with the senior management team according to the process to ensure the project is heading to the right direction.
  • Driving project decision making with appropriate cost benefit analysis
  • Ensuring the new product development process is adhered to and all the documentations are released according to the process.
  • Conducting project lessons learn and identifying the opportunity to improve the processes and practice.
  • Utilizing and maintaining the project management tools, methods and templates to improve the consistency across all the projects.
  • Providing weekly reporting and monthly project status update
  • Supporting the process and standard continuous improvement to aim and improve engineering standards, design processes, operational performance, and business sustainability

Candidate Requirements

A good communicator with excellent written and oral communication skills. Able to articulate to both internal engineers and external suppliers at all levels.

An engineering background of physical science, mechanical, electrical, electronic and/or software. A Knowledge of X-ray Systems would be an advantage.

Have managed Engineering Projects, including early TRL programs, ideally across engineering disciplines with a proven track record of successfully released products.


  • Some overseas travel will be required on larger projects.
  • Degree educated preferably in either Physical Sciences, Mechanical, Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
  • Ideally PMP or similar PM professional qualification or PRINCE2 qualified.
  • Must possess an engineering background and have demonstrable experience of managing engineering projects.
