About the Role:


As a Lead DevOps Engineer you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the stability, availability, and quality of our software applications and services. You will lead multiple cross-functional agile delivery teams, guiding and supporting DevOps Engineers to implement industry best practices and deliver products that meet our citizen services' needs efficiently.


Roles and Responsibilities:


  • Provide leadership to a diverse team of employees, offering expert advice and resolving complex problems.
  • Collaborate with DevOps Engineers and key technical decision-makers to define and execute strategic delivery visions.
  • Drive technical evolution within the organisation, evaluating and adopting emerging technologies while prioritising user needs.
  • Act as a departmental representative, promoting Engineering and DevOps practices, standards, and processes.
  • Develop and support the Engineering capability by nurturing talent, shaping career paths, and recruiting new talent.
  • Foster relationships with stakeholders, ensuring security, stability, and capacity are integrated into citizen services' development and deployment.
  • Make high-level decisions impacting various work areas within the organisation.
  • Collaborate with seniors to address technical challenges, resource allocation, and skills gaps within technical teams.
  • Identify and mitigate risks, devising effective plans to address them.
  • Design and implement strategies for building a reusable DevOps toolchain.
  • Consult with senior stakeholders, providing thorough analysis and recommendations influencing decision-making processes.
  • Offer advice on problems arising from specific work programmes or changes in Departmental policy, making balanced recommendations.


Technical Requirements:


  • Proficiency in converting technical requirements into solutions.
  • Experience with Linux Operating Systems, specifically RHEL.
  • Strong scripting skills, particularly in Terraform.
  • Expertise in Configuration Management tools like Ansible.
  • Familiarity with Version control systems, especially Git.
  • Hands-on experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment using GitLab CI.
  • Ability to modify, maintain, and evolve legacy systems and code.
  • Proficiency in standardising systems and code.
  • Experience with cloud applications, specifically AWS.
  • Skilful use and operation of tools including Bash, Python, Terraform, Ansible, NGINX, GitLab, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Experience in deploying, supporting, and patching systems.
  • Familiarity with APIs and Microservices.
  • Understanding of user testing methodologies.
