Summary

Freedom are currently recruiting a Senior Civil Engineer to join our team. The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for leading the civil design of electricity substations across the UK, meeting safety, quality, and environmental standards. This role requires strong technical expertise in civil engineering disciplines and offers the opportunity to work on a variety of high-profile projects across the energy sector.

You will be expected to collaborate with internal teams (electrical design, structural, surveys, wayleaves, environmental), clients, and stakeholders to deliver civil engineering solutions on projects ranging from £100K to £20M in value. The role will require attendance at client/contractor offices and construction sites as necessary.

Some of the key deliverables in this role will include:

  • Lead the production and review of engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and reports for civil works related to masonry buildings, steel portal frames, transformer bunds, drainage systems, and roads.
  • Work alongside clients and internal teams to ensure successful project delivery, identifying and mitigating any risks to programme, quality, or cost.
  • Attend design team meetings and progress meetings at client offices or construction sites to ensure the timely flow of information.
  • Provide engineering solutions to site-based issues through TQ/RFI processes.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior team members, promoting their professional development.
  • Ensure projects meet buildability requirements and manage design risks to deliver safe, efficient solutions.
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices, legislative changes, and customer requirements to ensure compliance across all projects.

  • Proven experience in designing civil structures such as masonry buildings, steel portal frames, and reinforced concrete.
  • Client-facing experience, with the ability to manage client relationships effectively.
  • Ability to lead multiple technical projects and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills for technical discussions with colleagues and clients.
  • A degree in Civil Engineering (or related subject), and ideally working towards Chartered or Incorporated status with a professional body such as ICE.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Experience within the electricity distribution sector, particularly substation design and electrical infrastructure.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, and Civils3D for civil engineering design.
