Job Title: Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer

Job Type: Fixed Term Contract-FTC (6 Months + Possible rolling extension)

Location: Hybrid (Southampton, Hull, Cardiff)


Reports to: Cloud & Experience Lead

Function: IT, Technology & Digital Experience, Information Security

Purpose: As a Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer, you will be responsible for the hands-on technical delivery of several critical infrastructure projects. This role is essential for the successful migration and upgrade of our IT systems, ensuring enhanced efficiency and reliability.


Scope:

  • Perform the retrofitting of communication rooms to prepare for the migration of IT infrastructure equipment, including switching, storage, and compute.
  • Execute the migration from VMware to Hyper-V, ensuring minimal disruption to operations and optimal performance post-migration.
  • Implement offsite backup solutions using tape drives to ensure data integrity and disaster recovery capabilities.
  • Work with the team to deliver a smooth exit and migration from our current colo facilities.
  • Carry out detailed technical tasks, including configuration, installation, and troubleshooting of hardware and software.
  • Work closely with the dedicated Project Manager to ensure alignment with project timelines and objectives.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of configurations, processes, and changes to ensure knowledge transfer and compliance with company standards.
  • Provide ongoing support and maintenance for the newly implemented systems to ensure their reliability and performance.


Accountabilities:

  • Deliver assigned technical tasks to agreed time, cost, and quality parameters in a flexible and appropriate manner.
  • Collaborate with IT management on planning and cost elements for technical implementations.
  • Ensure clear communication between the technical team and stakeholders.
  • Monitor and report on performance, resource usage, and expenditure against plans.
  • Evaluate and prioritize risks for analysis and response planning.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration within the team.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and best practices in IT infrastructure.


Skills:

  • Infrastructure Management: Expertise in managing and maintaining IT infrastructure, including servers, storage, and networking equipment. Specifically HPE blades and storage.
  • Virtualization: Proficiency in VMware and Hyper-V environments, including installation, configuration, and migration of VMs. Experience of setup and configuration of System Centre Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) & other System Centre Operations Manager.
  • Operating systems: Deep knowledge or Windows Server up to 2022 and proficient with Linux is desirable.
  • Backup Solutions: Experience with implementing and managing backup solutions, particularly tape drives and with Veeam backup.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Strong skills in diagnosing and resolving hardware and software issues.
  • Networking: Solid understanding of networking basic principles and technologies, including switches, routers, and firewalls, as well as core technologies such as DNS & DCHP.
  • Scripting and Automation: Ability to write scripts and automate tasks using tools such as PowerShell.
  • Security: Knowledge of IT security best practices and the ability to implement security measures to protect infrastructure.
  • Documentation: Excellent documentation skills to ensure clear and comprehensive records of configurations and processes.
  • Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing technologies and project requirements.
