Fixed Term or Secondment for 12 months

An exciting opportunity has arisen for one or two experienced pharmacists to be integral to supporting the implementation of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) Initial Education and Training reforms for Pharmacists within NHS Lothian. From July 2026, new pharmacists will join the GPhC pharmacist register as independent prescribers. To facilitate this, the underpinning knowledge elements required will be delivered within Years 1-4 of the MPharm degree and the 'Period of Learning in Practice' (PLP), where the knowledge is applied in practice, will occur during the Foundation Training Year.

You will help shape and deliver our training programmes to ensure trainees meet the GPhC learning outcomes. This will include co-ordinating the delivery and evaluation of experiential learning for undergraduate student pharmacists and for the foundation training year for 14 trainee pharmacists.

NHS Lothian covers Edinburgh city, East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian. We are the second largest health system in NHS Scotland and one of only four teaching Boards. We have strategic partnerships with local Universities, Local Authorities and our four Integration Joint Boards. We serve a population of 900,000, providing a range of primary, community based and acute hospital services. We also provide regional and national services across a range of clinical specialties.

The vision for the Pharmacy & Medicines service is to deliver clinically led, person-centred services to ensure patients across Lothian get the best from their medicines and pharmacy services. We are focused on creating an environment where each person in the team has the opportunity to flourish, develop and make best use of their skills.

This post will interest candidates with a desire to develop and evidence competency in the education, research and leadership domains of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Core Advanced Practice Curriculum. You will have the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of and contribute to national and local priorities in pharmacy education. There will be opportunities to be trained in and to facilitate Simulation Based Education and Physical Assessment Skills.

The post will be based within the Pharmacy Department (ERD Team) at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh and will work across NHS Lothian sites. You will liaise with other education and training pharmacists in Scotland, with NHS Education Scotland (NES) and the Schools of Pharmacy at the University of Strathclyde and Robert Gordon University.

Candidates must have a Master of Pharmacy Degree or equivalent, be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), and should have completed or have equivalent competence mapped to the.

We are flexible to considering the recruitment of one or two post holders. Please note in your application the number of days you would wish to work. If you are applying for a secondment arrangement, please ensure you have your line manager's approval.
