You will play a crucial role in developing and refining our in-house model to simulate the enhanced rock weathering (ERW) process from the soil to the ocean. This role will involve modifying, incorporating and improving existing reactive transport, agro-ecosystem, and hydrological models to accurately predict weathering rates, carbon sequestration, and environmental impacts of ERW specific to Brazilian conditions.The Impact you can makeYour work will directly inform company-level business decisions, translate into tangible advancements in our ERW technology, drive the optimization of our carbon capture processes, and contribute significantly to our ability to scale impactful climate solutions.Core working relationshipsYou will lead the development of the in-house model, but also work closely with the rest of the Science team to advance our understanding of the ERW process in the field & model improvements. You will report to our Geochemical Modelling and Data Analysis Lead (Junyao) and work closely with our Head of Science & Research (Christina), Head of Carbon (Matthew) and our Data Analyst (Veronica).Key ResponsibilitiesModel Development and RefinementDevelop and maintain an in-house model for simulating enhanced rock weathering process in the near-field (soil) and far-field (groundwater, surface water, ocean) zones based on existing reactive transport, agro-ecosystem, and hydrological modelsParameterize and validate the model using data from column, mesocosm, and field experiments to accurately reflect the specific feedstock, soil, climate, and geographic conditions of our projectsWork with in-house scientists to design and execute new research experiments to understand key mechanisms of the ERW process, which can be fed into the model developmentSimulation and Analysis:Conduct simulations to predict feedstock weathering rates, carbon sequestration, and the spatial and temporal transport of weathering products from soil to the oceanConduct field-scale water flux estimations to support porewater-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) quantificationAnalyze simulation results to understand the sensitivity of ERW performance to operational and environmental changes for optimal deployment strategyPredict the impact of ERW on key environmental parameters, including soil fertility, water quality, and crop growthCollaboration and Communication:Maintain existing and build new connections with external scientist for collaborative model developmentCommunicate model results and findings as reports and presentations to internal and external stakeholdersPresent research findings at academic conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journalsYou can be a Rock-Star if you haveCore Skills & ExperienceStrong understanding of geochemical processes and hydrological dynamics in the soil systemStrong programming skills (Python or Fortran) for model developmentExperience running models using high-performance computing resourcesExcellent analytical and problem-solving skillsStrong written and verbal communication skillsAbility to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic research-oriented startup environmentKey QualitiesPhD (or relevant experience) in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, Geology, Geochemistry, Earth Sciences, or a related field.3+ years of proven experience in developing, modifying, applying reactive transport, agro-ecosystem, and/or hydrological modelsBonus Points (but not essential)Experience with modeling watershed-scale hydrological processesExperience with modeling Enhanced Rock WeatheringLiving Our ValuesAt InPlanet, we have a big vision of solving climate change, and we are looking for individuals who are genuinely passionate about making a positive difference in the world of Carbon Removal Solutions.
