Job description
AI is bringing about huge changes to society, and it is our job as a team to work out how Government should respond. It is a once-in-a-generation moment, and an incredibly fast-paced and exciting environment.
Building on the platform created by the AI Safety Summit hosted by the UK in November 2023, the AI Policy directorate plays a leading role in providing strategic direction across Government and industry to establish the most trusted and pro-innovation system for AI governance in the world, ensure UK institutions and infrastructure have the necessary capabilities to maintain our strategic advantage, and drive forward our ambitious objectives home and abroad.
In July our Secretary of State asked the tech entrepreneur, Matt Clifford, to deliver an AI Opportunities Action Plan. This plan will be taken forward by the new AI Opportunities Unit to be established in DSIT, so that Government can drive the growth of the AI sector and support AI adoption across the economy to boost productivity and improve people's lives.
Person specification
This is a high profile and stretching role which will take forward the ambitious AI Opportunities Action Plan and support the establishment of the new AI Opportunities Unit in DSIT. Working closely with the Deputy Director and other Grade 6 colleagues, your team will be responsible for delivering key recommendations included in the Action Plan, developing the work programme and engaging closely with ministers, HMT and No 10.
You will:
Join the SMT to agree and deliver an ambitious work programme that meets ministers expectations and drives the growth of the UK's AI sector, supports the responsible adoption of AI across the economy, and improves the lives of people in the UK.Keep abreast of AI policy development and understand implications for our strategy and work programme, engaging closely with world leading experts from across industry, academia and civil society, as well as other government departments.Build strong and productive relationships with teams working on AI within DSIT and beyond, establishing and taking forward opportunities for collaboration and responding positively to constructive challenge.
Manage a diverse and empowered team, fostering an inclusive culture and supporting the wider management of the Deputy Directorate.Provide high quality briefing and presentations to the Secretary of State, junior ministers and special advisors,� communicating complex policy proposals concisely and clearly.
Skills and Experience�
We would love to hear from ambitious and motivated people with a track record in managing high performing teams, confident working at pace and comfortable with change. While some knowledge of AI and technology policy would be advantageous, applications are welcome from people who bring transferrable skills from other fields or sectors.
Essential:
Positive leadership and the ability to embed a culture of openness, respect, fair treatment and inclusion for all.Excellent communication skills, with experience of engaging with very senior people ( senior stakeholders, ministers, CEOs etc.).Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment with the experience and judgement needed to act on incomplete evidence and navigate Whitehall.Policy leadership skills - fostering a safe environment for innovation and creativity to flourish, where policy ideas are freely discussed, debated and tested upwards and outwards.Strong track record of delivering through others, including specialists and experts.Ability to build strong, trusted relationships, including with industry stakeholders, civil society and academia.A strong interest in technology policy.
