Job summary

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation is a scientific expert advisory committee who provide advice and recommendations to HM Government on immunisation matters. The Committee is supported by a scientific secretariat who work within UKHSA.

The post-holder has responsibility for providing scientific secretariat support to the UK Joint Committee for Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) as well as JCVI sub-groups, and UKHSA expert groups. This is a graduate position, managed by the JCVI Routine Immunisation lead supporting the Head of the JCVI scientific secretariat and consultant leads for vaccine preventable diseases.

Job description

Scientific secretariat support to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, and certain UKHSA groups, and sub-groups established to provide advice. This will include supporting sub-committees, sub-groups, technical committees and professional networks as required.�

The general support to these committees involves:

working closely with the chair and relevant consultant epidemiologists to ensure the smooth running of assigned JCVI sub-committees and UKHSA expert groupsproducing support papers of a scientific and/or technical nature in collaboration with UKHSA experts and committee members.preparing agendas and other papers within agreed timetables.managing the collating and dispatching of meeting papers with the support of��administrative staff.organising and attending meetings, recording discussions, preparing minutes and follow up actions arising from the meeting.assisting the Chair and Members to achieve their aims and objectives.supervising administrative staff to ensure effective arrangement is made for meeting rooms, equipment, refreshments, travel and other requirements.

The post-holder responsibilities include organising and attending meetings, collating and sending out paperwork, writing minutes of the discussions and preparing action notes. The post-holder may be asked to follow up actions with members ensuring progress is made. In addition, the post-holder may be asked to write correspondence on behalf of committee Chairs and ensure information flow between groups within and external to UKHSA.

Tasks are varied and include coordinating with other UKHSA divisions and some government departments on JCVI advice and providing scientific support to meetings. Additionally, the post holder may be asked to seek contributions to the response to Parliamentary questions on behalf of JCVI.

The role requires developing and maintaining familiarity with the scientific issues and areas relevant to the JCVI and UKHSA expert groups. The postholder is responsible for bringing relevant issues/evidence to the attention of the Chair and members.� This will include scanning for relevant scientific papers, surveillance bulletins and media coverage and attendance at relevant conferences and seminars.

The post holder will be able to deal efficiently with Freedom of Information (Fol) requests and liaise with the Press Office over media statements as necessary. The role may also include helping to provide responses to enquiries that may come from health professionals, medical students, academics, media, the general public and any other interested parties. This means using discretion over replies, and tailoring the response to the appropriate level, dealing in a sympathetic way in relation to sensitive issues
