Job Title: Commercial Lawyer
Location: Hertford / Stevenage - hybrid working opportunities
Starting Salary: £50,848, plus £5,222 Market Enhancement, with the opportunity to progress to £56,246, plus £5,232 Market Enhancement, per annum, plus one off Welcome Payment of £4000 (pro rata for part-time)* 
Hours: 37 per week - part time considered
Contract: Permanent - fixed term contracts considered

Hertfordshire County Council offers an ideal opportunity for highly motivated, enthusiastic and organised Lawyers to join a large and thriving public sector legal team.

The Lexcel accredited Legal Services is currently based in the beautiful Grade II listed County Hall in Hertford, within easy reach by train of North and East London, but is likely to move its office function to Farnham and Robertson House in Stevenage in the new year, which also has excellent road and rail links.

With over 100 employees, it is one of the largest legal departments in local government and provides a full legal service across all specialisms to both the County Council, District Councils and to other public sector bodies.

We are looking to grow our successful Commercial Law Team, which is central to the broad portfolio of legal work connected with Hertfordshire’s projects across the County and within its Districts.

The Commercial Law Team provides legal advice and assistance to client departments and District Councils on a wide range of commercial maters, and the role also offers the opportunity to be involved in supporting a number of the Council’s major infrastructure and community facing projects, from Highways through to Adult Care.

Requirements

You should be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.

We welcome applicants who possess excellent drafting skills and the ability to negotiate documents for a wide range of matters.

Ideally you would have comprehensive knowledge of the broad spectrum of commercial work, including construction contracts, company secretarial work, negotiating and concluding a variety of concession, goods and services contracts, negotiating and concluding funding agreements, as well as pension arrangements.

You will be required to provide strategic advice on procurements subsidy control and data protection in addition to interpretating various contractual documents.

The role also involves being aware of changing legislation and the implications of changing legislation and case law, whilst also being interested in developing specialist knowledge in other areas, such as subsidy control.

You should be highly motivated, enthusiastic and organised, with a proactive and “can do” attitude with a willingness to work with internal and external clients across a wide range of property matters.

Previous experience of working within a Local Authority environment would be useful but is not essential. It is possible that the role could involve travel to other parts of Hertfordshire so access to your own transport would be beneficial.

The Commercial Law Team is a fundamental part of the development of the county council and provides the opportunity to be involved in a broad portfolio of legal work concerned with major projects involving major highways procurements, housing and care provision as well as IT contracts. There are also a number of complex procurements involving the restructure of service provision and the provision of training.

This role is about being commercially, as well as legally, aware of the issues surrounding contracts, procurement and future delivery of services across Hertfordshire County Council
