Job summary

The post holder will work within the beat team to maintain and enhance the Forestry England estate using a range of practical and countryside skills with a heavy emphasis on timber mensuration and restocking. The post holder will be expected to support the District's Strategic Plan in accordance with Forestry England�s Vision by implementing programmes of work across the Beat and wider forest in a focused, motivated, enthusiastic way and maintain good relations with neighbours and the public.

Job description

Forest mensuration and general surveying
Work to deliver the timber sales plan by stratifying, sampling and applying the conventions of FC booklet 39 (the Blue Book), and providing growing stock inventory data.

Undertake other monitoring and data-gathering tasks such as fence line and boundary inspections and the assessment of tree density on restocked and newly planted sites.

Restocking
Undertake the planting of both cell grown and bare root planting stock on ground prepared using different techniques. Planting should be carried out to a high standard of both quality and output whilst achieving accurate spacing to ensure that the desired stocking density is achieved.

General forest maintenance
Carry out a diverse range of practical forest maintenance to a high standard in accordance with Health and Safety and Environmental guidance, including planting, beating up, fencing, barrier repairs, sign maintenance, weeding and cleaning.� Work effectively as part of a small team, and when requested respond quickly to unexpected work and issues raised by supervisors and foresters.

Maintain, restore and create various habitats for ecological benefit and improvement of the landscape. The work will include the planting of trees and shrubs and the management of vegetation, which will include fencing.

Champion the vision, ethos and values of Forestry England when talking to visitors and when working with Colleagues, Contractors and Volunteers.

Experience:

Experience of working both independently and within a team.Ability to self-motivate and to motivate others and the ability to monitor own performance in terms of output and quality.Able to demonstrate a willingness and ability to learn and develop own knowledge.

Experience / Technical Expertise:

Desirable

Familiarity with Forestry England timber mensuration conventions, processes and standards. Previous experience of the tools and techniques used in timber mensuration will be an advantage.Previous experience of tree planting both bare root and cell grown stock.Experience of practical work in the countryside and a general understanding of forestry, nature conservation and countryside related issues.Experience of surveying forests for inventory and timber sales information.A familiarity with a variety of hand tools and ability to demonstrate competence in their use.Experience of working in a productive forest environment.
