BT relies on submarine cables to form the backbone of the global transmission network delivering services and products to BT's multinational corporate customers. 99% of BT's international traffic is carried over submarine cables and BT also relies on submarine cables to deliver domestic services within the UK, including superfast broadband. The Subsea Engineering Manager manages a team of engineers and technicians that ensures BT subsea cable assets are designed, engineered and operated in a way that fully meets BT's requirements.
This role requires a full UK Drivers Licence & eligibility for SC/DV Clearance
This role is based in Bude, Cornwall and requires daily travel to Goonhilly and Lands End
What you'll be doing
- Managing all Team Members within the BT Subsea Team, evaluating performance against established BT expectations for the defined roles.
- Leading, motivating, coaching, empowering and inspiring an operational subsea engineering team, balancing all people, Subsea Team, customer and financial priorities.
- Managing subsea engineers in the installation, operation, maintenance and recovery of subsea cables across the UK (and if appropriate, overseas) for BT, Consortia owners and customers.
- Ensuring that the subsea engineers understand and meet agreed service levels, maintaining appropriate control and visibility of delivery to those standards.
- Ensuring Team Member security and safety, taking direct responsibility for a safe working environment and that all specialist subsea safety training is conducted in accordance with agreed procedures and timelines for both BT Subsea Team Members and wider BT.
- Supporting Team Members in dealing with challenging subsea cable or backhaul network operational issues, providing coordination across relevant Team Members and 2nd line support staff to escalate and resolve.
- Ensuring visibility of the Team Member workload and resourcing by appropriate reporting into the wider BT Subsea Team.
- Taking responsibility for the management and reporting of Total Labour Resource and Cost (TLR & TLC) and operational budgets for Team Members.
- Delivering change initiatives and transformation activities that break down locational barriers to create a harmonious team, able to flex across all cable landing station locations and support each other to deliver all work commitments.
- Coaching Team Members to broaden and improve skills through mentoring, development, training and recruitment, fostering a culture of continuous learning, cross skilling and support between team members.
- Guiding and ensuring the implementation of improved operational processes within the BT Subsea Team.
