Job description

Are you passionate about how data is used to drive decision making? Would you like to be a part of a team that helps to shape how the UK government use data to advance science and technology? We are recruiting a team of data enthusiasts with a problem solving mindset to work across the organisation to inspire change and deliver the department�s first generation data are brand-new roles created as we establish the Data Transformation team in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). It is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a team enabling DSIT to deliver on its ambitions to position the UK at the forefront of global scientific and technological advancement. You will work as part of the Data Transformation team, delivering improvements in data practices across the department as part of the development and implementation of the Data will work with stakeholders to identify data opportunities to achieve and enhance business outcomes and mitigate risks where necessary. These opportunities could be related to any area of data transformation (data governance, data acquisition, data strategy etc.) depending on the needs of the business.� You will be visible across the department as positive champions of change around data practices supporting adoption of new policies. One role will report into the Data Acquisition Lead and one will report into the Data Strategy Lead. However, the team will be managed in a matrixed way to match the workload and suit the needs of the team. You will contribute to the maturing of data practices by designing and drafting policy and process documentation. You will train and support colleagues in the adoption of these policies and processes.

You will build internal relationships across the department and you may represent the department in cross-government communities of interest. The role would be suited to someone who enjoys collaborating across multi-disciplinary stakeholder groups, finding and championing opportunities for change and building confidence in others.

Key responsibilities

We are recruiting two SEO posts and the exact split of responsibilities will depend on the skillsets, experience and interests of the successful candidates. Together, you will:

Take an active role to promote better use of data in the department, inspiring and educating to build a positive data culture across DSIT.Act as a partner to the business, understanding user needs and interpreting and translating technical data concepts into business language.Undertake project work on data improvement initiatives relating to any/all areas of data transformation data governance, data quality, data culture and data literacy.Continually communicate and improve data management practices across the department.Build relationships across the department as a visible, positive data change champion.Support and enable colleagues across the department to understand their responsibilities with respect to data policies and processes.Work with other government departments and groups to share best practice and transfer knowledge.Support and help drive forward efforts to reduce the risk of non-compliance with data protection legislation across the department through signposting and close working with data protection specialists.

Essential criteria

Experience of working within or closely with a data or analytical team.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience of building trusted relationships to deliver outcomes in a collaborative environment.
The ability to engage stakeholders and motivate them to embrace change.
Experience developing and delivering change projects.
Passionate about the DSIT mission.

Desirable criteria

Relevant data governance expertise.
DAMA or similar industry-recognised data management training, qualification, or equivalent experience.

Alongside your salary of �38,860, Department for Science, Innovation & Technology contributes �11,257 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

Office attendance

The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK.
