Overall Position Summary and Objectives
Scientific Support for Neuroanatomical and Neuroimaging Analysis of NonHuman Primate (NHP) and Human Brain. The Section on Quantitative Imaging and Tissue Sciences (SQITS) National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is engaged in an array of neuroanatomical and neuroimaging research activities with the longterm application of clinical translation to assess normal and abnormal development degeneration aging and trauma using novel quantitative Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging biomarkers.

Certifications & Licenses
- Minimum scientific training would be a Ph.D. or comparable advanced degree in cell or tissue biology or related disciplines with an expertise in vital microscopy and low field NMR profiling.
Skills (Ranked by Priority)
- Knowledge and experience in neurobiology is a requirement. Significant postdoctoral research experience and training (greater than seven years) are also required.

Statement of Work Details
Supports the planning and execution of research experiments in the context of the laboratorys overall research program.
- Evaluate new techniques instruments and software for potential incorporation into current SOP.
- Advance the science in the laboratory through new procedures and discoveries.
- Design and conduct experiments and studies requiring the application of a broad professional knowledge of scientific theories and principles.
- Advance the science through proposing and investigating new target projects for initiation based on novelty and relevance to human health.
- Sophisticated skills knowledge and experience to perform specific functions to elucidate the structure and organization of NHP and human brain tissue including the study of layers and columns and deep brain areas and their connectivity
- Contractor should have excellent familiarity with below required experimental methods:
a. Dissecting and various types of light fluorescence and staining methods of neural tissue.
b. Fluorescence light microscopy of fixed tissues expressing various stains and fluorescent proteins.
c. Copy and image acquisition or digitization
d. Knowledge of MRI methods that can be used to image fixed tissue.
e. Combining correlating and integrating histological and MR imaging methods
Supports laboratory staff on research projects and techniques.
- Work with staff on the interpretation of experiments performed by research scientists.
- Independently direct and conduct special research projects that have a high priority for the laboratory with special emphasis in the development of novel research treatments.
- Work with postdoc/biological scientists to perform statistical analysis for research projects.
Maintains laboratory equipment and the training of others in their use.
- Provide advice and assistance to users in designing experiments using instrumentation data acquisition and analysis and preparing figures for publication.
Assists in maintaining adequate space and facilities for ongoing and projected research studies.
- Submit and gain approval of laboratory animal study protocols.
- Manage scientific equipment and resources (e.g. reagents stocks of frozen sells animal samples) including acquisition documentation and storage.
- Participate in the laboratorys review of future proposals for resource allocations.
Evaluates analyses and interprets research data communicates results and methods in reports presentations and manuscripts.
- Write technical reports and prepare manuscripts.
- Oversee project data quality; analyze and interpret project data.
- Conduct bioinformatics data analyses and statistical analyses; prepare data for abstracts and manuscripts.
- Maintain a detailed and uptodate electronic laboratory notebook detailing all experiments.
- Contractor should separately and collaboratively analyze data collected in various imaging and histology experiments above and produce detailed written reports of findings abstracts journal articles posters and other publications including employee invention reports (EIRs) book chapters reports PowerPoint slides and other indicia of productivity. Minimum scientific training would be a Ph.D. or comparable advanced degree and training neuroscience particularly neuroanatomy and histology. Significant postdoctoral research experience and training (greater than seven years) are also required. 3
Coordinates with junior staff to modify research protocols.
- Work with Principal Investigators in scheduling and prioritizing instrument usage.
- Suggest alternative or complementary approaches to experiments.
Presents research at national scientific meetings and symposia.
- Prepare oral presentations and posters for internal and external groups/conferences.
- Coauthor manuscripts on research projects; publish in peerreviewed journals.
- Write papers and abstracts detailing research efforts and results for publication in peerreviewed journals; prepare PowerPoint presentations as appropriate.
- Review edit and as needed write first drafts of papers posters and manuscripts.
- Give posters and presentations detailing work at regional and national scientific meetings.
- Present results of clinical and experimental research at recognized scientific meetings by lectures and exhibits (poster sessions).
Provides interpretation of results guidance and scientific support to the management team.
- Search existing literature for new and/or relevant techniques.
- Assist the lab staff in the creation and preparation of a variety of documents required by the labs scientific activities.
Mentors junior level scientists.
