Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is seeking a Civil Engineer (Quarries) for our South Region, to manage our quarries and stone production programme.

We build and maintain roads and bridges, access routes and recreation infrastructure; locate and manage quarries; and adapt our infrastructure to meet the challenges of a changing climate, including reducing land slip hazards and managing increased water runoff.

Job description

The Civil Engineer (Quarries) will be responsible for all aspects of managing, designing and developing the quarries in South Region, with the objective of producing the roadstone required to deliver the annual programme of road construction and maintenance works. The requirement for road stone in South Region is approximately 300 000 tonnes per year, (approximately 20 blasts per year).

The post holder will be responsible for managing the in-house drilling programme, utilising the Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) drill rig, and for designing, organising and supervising quarry and roadline blasts. The drilling programme will be developed in consultation with the other Civil Engineers in the region. The post holder will line manage the drill rig operator and will also line manage a Works Supervisor (Quarries), who will assist in many aspects of the role as directed by the post holder. There are currently 238 quarries recorded in the region, of these approximately 90 are used as required.

Many of these sites need to be remediated and closed, to remove existing hazards, liabilities and management costs. The post holder will develop a programme of remediation for these quarries and this will be actioned as available budget allows.

Experience

Essential:

Experience in managing quarry operations.Experience in blasting and managing blasting operations, acting as shotfirer and explosives supervisor

�Desirable:

Experience in NEC3 or NEC4 contract management.Use of quarry profiling equipment and relevant NVQ unit.

Technical

Essential:

Explosives Supervisor NVQ level 5 or equivalent. (Consideration may be given to suitably experienced candidates working towards this qualification and who will achieve it within 6 months of being appointed to the job)Shot firer NVQ level 3 or equivalent. (Consideration may be given to suitably experienced candidates working towards this qualification and who will achieve it within 6 months of being appointed to the job)Competent user of Microsoft office.

�Desirable:

SHE NVQ level 4/6 diploma or equivalent in quarrying operations.Knowledge of GIS systems
